    Converting Laptop as router

    Dilip Kumar Pandey

      Hi Friends,

I have got a question here regarding LAN / Internet / Wifi

Currently I am accessing internet through network LAN cable (Broadband) and wish to share the internet via Laptop as WiFi so that I can connect my smartphone / tablet to internet.  Please help.

I am using windows 7 - service pack 1 - 32 bit in Lenovo T410 laptop model. Let me know if you need further details and share the steps using which I can extract those information from system   thanks.

          Dilip,

          Take a peek here.

Basically, set up your WiFi in Ad-Hoc mode, using your wired network as a upstream connection. You can teather your smart devices wirelessly to your laptop.

"At this point, you should be able to connect any wireless device to your new ad hoc network and access the internet, or even share files directly with your laptop."

I have read through the link.. at above point I got stuck.. my mobile is not detecting that the wifi network which I created.  Please suggest further.  Thanks.

              Dilip,

Mobile devices do not have sophisticated antennae and are not able to "see" 5 gHz signal. What wireless signal are you propogating?

Okay.. and how to check what signal I am propogating?  Thanks.

                  Hi Jason,

Can you help me to identify this ??

Also, someone told me that object45 to USB router (a small device like pen drive) can help here which would be plugged in my laptop and then it can further broadcast wifi ... Do you have any idea about this ?

Thanks for your support and looking forward for further guidance.

                    Dilip,

I don't know anything about the USB device you mention, sorry.

I followed the tutorial and, while I can see the ad-hoc network with my smart phone, there is a message saying, "AdHoc is not supported by Android platform yet!".

I have a non rooted Motorola, so the OS is a few steps behind. Android version 2.3.5 currently. FYI Motorola is always slow to deploy the latest Android OS... :\

I am using WiFi Analyzer which is a free app iirc.

I am going to take a guess and say the antenna will broadcast the network protocol types / signal frequency it is able to natively use - since I didn't have the choice of network protocol type. I am also not able to make adjustments after configuration.

Can you specify how your device fails to detect the signal, what apps / interfaces you are using to find it?

if your laptop hardware supports intel mywifi dashboard, you can enable the hotspot feature which you can share internet up to 8 devices (mobile and laptops)

Intel® My WiFi Dashboard - Ultra Wi-Fi Portability

                      hope this help.

                        @Jason.  Thanks for your reply

Can you specify how your device fails to detect the signal, what apps / interfaces you are using to find it?

My device (Samsung Galaxy Ace) detects wifi signals in many wifi zones like malls / airports etc. but how it detects? I am not sure.  What apps / interfaces I am using ? I am using mobile's inbuilt wifi option.

@Sage.  Thanks for your reply and suggestion.

Yes, my laptop (Dell XPS L502X) supports Intel My WiFi technology and I used to share internet earlier, using this successfully.

Only difference I can see here in current situation is that :-

                        I was successful when :-

                        Internet Source:- Mobile Service provider

Broadcasting Wifi using:- Mobile phone (Samsung Galaxy Ace)

Destination (using wifi in) :- Laptop (Dell XPS L502X)

                        Result :- Successful

                        Now I am un-successful when :-

Internet Source:- LAN (office LAN Cable / Hotel LAN cable) with free internet facility

Broadcasting Wifi using:-  Laptop (Dell XPS L502X) releasing wifi using Intel My Wifi Technology / tried "adhoc connection" as well

Destination (using wifi in) :-   Mobile phone (Samsung Galaxy Ace) / tablets etc

                        Result :- Un-Successful.

Note:- Here my mobile phone connects with laptop in window "Intel my Wifi Technology" and yes, I have clicked on button "share my internet"    BUT when I opened internet browser (or an app which runs on internet) on my mobile, it did'nt worked.

My thought:- So can we summarize this issue as "Using laptop, we can further broadcast wifi if we are connected to Internet via wifi and we CANNOT further broadcast wifi if we are connected to internet using Broadband LAN cable.

I hope this clears my position.  If you need more details, let me know and I would be happy to share that.  Thanks.

If anyone else has faced this situation or some one can confirm that my thought is correct, I will give up

                        Regards,

                          Hi Jason / Sage,

I hope I am clear in my previous post

Just to summarize, I am successful in converting my laptop as router  when :-

                          Internet Source:- Mobile Service provider

Broadcasting Wifi using:- Mobile phone (Samsung Galaxy Ace)

Destination (using wifi in) :- Laptop (Dell XPS L502X)

                          Result :- Successful

                          Now I am un-successful when :-

Internet Source:- LAN (office LAN Cable / Hotel LAN cable) with free internet facility

Broadcasting Wifi using:-  Laptop (Dell XPS L502X) releasing wifi using Intel My Wifi Technology / tried "adhoc connection" as well

Destination (using wifi in) :-   Mobile phone (Samsung Galaxy Ace) / tablets etc

                          Please guide me further.  Thanks.

Hi Dilip, have you tried using windows built-in internet connection sharing on your Dell laptop? just to further isolate the issue

Internet Source:- LAN (office LAN Cable / Hotel LAN cable) with free internet facility

Thanks sage99 for reading through my points.

I tried finding the "windows Internet connection sharing"  but could not locate it.. is it something like creating adhoc network connection using wifi and then connecting mobile device to this.. if Yes, I had already tried this as well but after creating such connection, my mobile device failed to detect that there is any wifi / network available to be connected.

                              Please guide further.  Thanks.

                                Hi Dilip,

Internet Connection Sharing is a feature in Windows network connection and you will need to enable this feature to allow other devices to access internet via the laptop/computer.

                                  Hi ichun,

I have used this option as well and allowed other devices to access internet which I am broadcasting further using my laptop, in which internet is connected via broadband network cable. The only issue is that other devices are NOT recognizing that there is any wifi network available to connect

Note:- As mentioned earlier, I am successful in broadcasting internet when I connect my laptop to any wifi source and then I can connect my other devices to the wifi which is getting released from laptop.

                                  Please guide further.  Thanks.

                                    Hi Guys,

I am wondering if I am first in this world who is asking this question or there is no resolution to this.

If anyone want I can share my screen using team viewer as well but I need to know if this is even achievable as I think this is fare expectation to share the internet from broadband network cable -> Laptop -> WiFi  (without involvement of any router).  Thanks.

                                    Regards,
