Star Wars KotOR I&II with Intel HD Graphics (Core i5/i7)

Hi All,

Since Kotor and Kotor II have come to steam some issues have arisen. One big one being that neither games work on my 2500K's graphics and I'm not the only one experiencing this. The problem is that the games will run, play the intro movies, briefly show a blank black screen, before crashing with a "kotor/kotor2 has stopped working" message. The fault module is always the intel graphics driver dll. I have played these games in the past on extremely old intel graphics chipsets from the pentium 4 era. The fact that they don't work on my 2500K's graphics is quite sad.

Here's the details of what happens.

hi,

Can you reply back with answers to the following questions?

What is the graphics driver version you are currently using on this computer?

Have you tested the latest version?

Operating system version?

There is a new driver available for your graphics controller; it was developed for win8 but works on win7 as well.

See here:

I had used the latest version and previous version as suggested by someone on the Steam forums. Neither worked.

OS is windows 7 x64 ultimate.

I'll try that Win8 driver when I have a chance. I have my dedicated card back now though.

Hello there,

Same problem here. I've got an Intel Core i3 2350M based laptop (HD 3000 graphics) and cannot run these games. I've heard that HD 4000 got a driver update with this problem fixed, but with the latest HD 3000 driver (version 9.17.10.3062) games still crash... Although the release dates are the same for both drivers and the only difference is version number (15.31.3.64.3071 for HD 4000).

Did you actually get to windowed mode or did it still start at fullscreen? I have the same problem with the integrated GPU and I get past the black screen in windowed, only problem is I can only get windowed to activate once per reinstall (of kotor 1 or 2). I spent some time looking around and several forums have discussed this (regarding all versions: retail cd, steam and "best of pc" edition) where the intel driver is concerned I found no solutions. As the HD3000 performance is crap in 1920x1200 and I need the game to start in fullscreen in order to get my discrete GPU running through lucid I have abandoned this.

@iyappi: The 3062 driver is worlds different from the 3071, so it is not just a numbering difference. That being said, the issue was supposed to be resolved in both drivers. Are you unable to run either KoToR 1 & 2, or just one of them? Can you test out the OEM provided Intel® Graphics display driver, and let me know if the issue still occurs with it (as well as the version/date of the OEM driver)? Additionally, can you provide a copy of your dxdiag? (Start -> Run -> dxdiag -> Save All Information).

@medo3000: The report you provided mentioned you were using the .2884 driver, not the 3062. Try completely uninstalling your graphics driver (deleting all related files if prompted), and re-installing the latest (.3062) driver, and let me know if the issue still occurs? Also, please provide a copy of your dxdiag (Start -> Run -> dxdiag -> Save All Information).

Thanks,

-Nic

@ allan_intel: Thank you for your reply.

@nic : Thank you too. I always do a clean install and i'm sure that the problem is the driver itself because i download the zip version of the driver and it contains version 9.17.10.2884 of (ig4icd32.dll) in the driver package. It looks like driver v9.17.10.3062 is packed with wrong dll version.

and here is my dxdiag :

After trying many fixes I resolved the kotor 2 issue by installing the international version of the 1.0b patch from lucasarts. http://www.lucasarts.com/support/update/kotor2int.html LucasArts.com | Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords

Hope this helps others as I spent WAY more time chasing wild geese before finding this.
