Acer laptop Aspire 5750

Intel Core i5-2410M 2.3Ghz

Intel HD Graphics3000 > driver version 8.15.10.2342 since 12/5/2012

Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bits

4 GB DDR3

640 GB HDD

Hi folks,

I am using above laptop for teaching, among other things the beginnings of photography, corrections on computer and so on....

In May I had the (misplaced) idea of looking for updates through the Acer Update link. There was an update for the Intel VGA driver which I downloaded and installed. Since then I cannot see a single photo in Windows Explorer. No matter in which view option, filmstrip, thumbnail or whatever I just get the well known Windows landscape with the titel of the photo underneath. As I use a system of numbering as titel and cannot know a few thousand digit combinations by heart, I have no way of selecting a photo unless I open it in a photo program. Rather irritating - to say the least...

Until the update there was no such problem at all.

Anybody out there any idea how I can get my thumbnails back? Any similar experiences?

Thanks & grts

n Windows

Well, I was just going to report the same thing... 🙂 While before downloading I could see in a list on the Intel site that it is validated for my i5, when I try to install I get 'The driver is not validated for this computer - check with the producers of the computer. And getting help from Acer? Hmmm.... no comment...

I sounds like Acer has a customized driver installed that blocks the installation of the generic Intel HD Graphics driver.

There is a way to install the generic driver and overwrite the OEM installed driver however, you must be warned that you will loose any OEM customizations Acer made to the driver specific to your system.

If you want to try the generic driver, follow these steps:

1. Download the latest graphics driver in zip format for your system http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=21429&lang=eng here.

2. Extract win7_64-152612.zip to a folder on your desktop.

3. Open Control Panel

4. Open Device Manager

5. Double click on Display Adapters

6. Double click on Intel HD Graphics Family

7. Click on Driver tab

8. Click on Update Driver button

9. Click on "Browse my computer for driver software" option

10. Click on "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer" option

11. Click on Have Disk button

12. On the Install From Disk dialog, click Browse

13. In the Locate File dialog, navigate to the folder you extracted the driver to in step 2 above.

14. When you have navigated to that folder, navigate to the Graphics sub-folder

15. In the Graphics sub-folder, you will see the file "igdlh64.inf", double click this file

16. You will then be back at the "Install From Disk" dialog, click OK

17. You will then be back at the "Update Driver Software" dialog, click Next

18. The driver installer will now start, wait for it to complete

19. When the process has completed, close the open Device Manager dialogs and you will be asked to reboot.

20. Reboot and you should be updated

Hi Robert,

Before I try, two questions:

There is a way to install the generic driver and overwrite the OEM installed driver however, you must be warned that you will loose any OEM customizations Acer made to the driver specific to your system.

Do you have an idea what the consequences of that would be?

Can this be rolled back without having to reinstall completely?

Usually the customizations include things like disabling rotation, or setting hot dock properties. You can still test the generic driver and roll back to the Acer driver. You can also create a restore point before installing the generic and use it to restore should the generic not work as expected. You could also just re-install the Acer driver over the generic.

Hi Ning,

Acer apparently did not do such a hot job of customizing with the last one we had.

This is worth a try... 🙂

Hi Robert,

To be on the safe side, I am checking with Acer as well. All they came up with in 24 hours is the question if this is the only problem I am having - which in my book means they haven't got a clue yet... 😉

So this may still take a while...

To be continued...

Rotation is a "feature" of the graphics driver that allows you to flip the image on your screen 90, 180, and 270 degrees. For instance, if rotation in enabled and you press the Ctrl+Alt+Down Arrow keys together the image will rotate 180 degrees. Press the Ctrl+Alt+Up Arrow keys together and the image will rotate back to normal. Ctrl+Alt+Left Arrow keys together will rotate 90 degrees and Ctrl+Alt+Left Arrow keys together will rotate 270 degrees. Try it.

If rotation doesn't work for you then I suspect it has been disabled in the Acer customized driver.

Last update from Acer:

They think maybe I should do a system recovery.... and give me instructions on how to do it

And then spend a few days to get everything back in place? I don't know if I should be angry, bitter or just lough out loud. They make an update available that produces this problem and all they can come up with is this? Ooops!...

So, the first moment I have the time to do it, I will try your suggestion, Robert. Rotation is not an issue as my camera is already set to do that before I even upload. And if it goes wrong, there is still system recovery, no? But then at least I tried something else first...

It will probably not be before friday that I can do it but I will let you know how it went...

Thanks & grts

Hi Robert, ning,

I installed the driver as described above and had no problems with it. Nor any problems afterwards.

The catch was that it did not solve the problem either... I was still staring at Windows icons...

I removed a few Windows updates from around the same time the problem started and that were no security updates > still no joy...

So I went through the whole Control Panel, searching for some item that might be related to this. And found it!

Something utterly stupid, really. In Folder Options/View you have a list of items. One of them is (free translation) 'Always show pictograms, never miniatures'. (That could be icons and thumbnails too in translation) And for some mysterious reason that was ticked. I know for sure that I have never been near the thing. My data are usually on an external disk and I have no reason whatsoever to change any folder options. So it may have been that the Acer update for Graphics did it but knowing Microsoft updates, I am thinking it may have been some Windows update after all. It would not be the first (and probably not the last) time...

So, Robert, thank you very much for your time. I am still glad that maybe I am one of the very few with an original Acer notebook that also has the latest graphics driver and do not regret installing it.

And ning, you know what to look for:

Control Panel/Folder Options/View and find that item and untic it. Your pictures will be back

Thanks and grts

Hi Ning

This driver is for the 32 bit version of Windows 8. You have the 64 bit version installed. Do to the WHQL requirements of the 64 bit version you cannot install a test driver that is not certified for Windows 8 64 bit version.
