I`m afraid, that even with third-party card you will be unable to boot from over 2 TB storage, cause (U)EFI support in 5000 series boards is buggy and preliminary according to modern Microsoft & Linux requirements (we was unable to boot EFI-enabled Fedora Linux distro on S5000PAL system and Ubuntu checker claim our server as UEFI-incompatible)
Thanks for the info, I was afraid that we wouldn't be able to do anything with the motherboard / embedded RAID. I don't need to boot from the 3TB drives, just add them as additional storage. I have found reference to an IBM Serveraid Card that does support the 3TB drives. Still looking into that.
