Cox's new MPEG-4 channels + Intel Video 2000 + Media Center = black screen?

So Cox in my area has added a "Plus Package" that contains a handful of new HD channels, trialing MPEG4 delivery.

Whenever I tune to one of these channels (about 8 channels) on my main HTPC (w/PCIe Ceton + Intel Video 2000) I get one of two results:

1. A "display driver error" with "does not support playback of protected content"

2. A black screen, but I can hear the audio of the program.

Typically I'll get # 1 first, and then # 2 occurs on all subsequent attempts to tune the channel.

If I tune to these channels using an XBOX 360 extender they work fine (indicating there is not a problem with the channels themselves, or the Ceton CableCard tuner). Likewise I have a second HTPC with a video card (NVidia) and it can tune them fine.

The PC is a new build as follows:

Core i3-2120T

DZ68DB (latest BIOS + chipset drivers)

Corsair XMS3 4x4gb

Ceton InfiniTV 4 PCIe (latest firmware)

Any ideas ?

Thanks!

Dave

MPEG4 (H.264) Channels through WMC, No Video w/ Intel Core i3 HD Graphics

I am having the same problem and would request Intel release a Driver Update to support H.264 video from a cable provider using a CableCARD tuner and WMC.

Cox Arizona has launched a Tier of channels that is broadcast in MPEG4 (H.264). There appears to be an issue with displaying the Video when using Intel Core i3 integrated HD Graphics. The Audio comes through but there is no Video just a black screen. There is not any error messages and the Log entries look normal.

PC that does not display Video:

  • Intel Core i3-2105 - HD Graphics 3000 - Latest Driver Installed 8.15.10.2696
  • ASUS P8H67-V (REV 3.0) LGA 1155 Intel H67 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

The Intel Utility says I am running the latest and Windows Update has nothing newer.

OS Win 7 Home Premium SP1 64-bit

I do have Shark007 Codecs x64 installed if that matters, Perhaps I will uninstall them and see what happens.

These channels do work properly on my Toshiba Laptop w/ Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset though.

There is at least one other report from someone using a Ceton InfiniTV4

Is it possible for someone at Intel to investigate this issue? Please.

I too am having this issue when tuning certain video streams from my Ceon InfiniTV 4 PCI-e. I know this is an Intel driver issue because I previously had the same hardware installed in my HTPC (before upgrading) and it worked.

I changed to an Asus P8Z77 Mainboard and an Intel 3570K with HD4000 and now on some of the "protected" content such as the new Cox (Phoenix) Channels for DIYHD and certain channels like HBO and Starz wont tune in and give Video Driver Error - Can not display protected content blah blah blah.

It would be interesting to see if there is a bug in the HDCP portion of the driver set.

I have the same problem using a HDHomeRun Prime Tuner with Cox Phoenix. Any fix on the horizon?

I have two brand new Dell 660s's each with a Hauppauge DCR-2650 and a Cisco STA152 Tuning Adapter. I have worked on this thing for hours and hours and could not get it to work. I then tried it in my old MediaCenter PC with an ATI card and it worked off the bat. Please add me to the list. I have also opened a support ticket but it is clear now that the issue is with the Intel On-Board Video Card.

I have the same problem- across the i3 2100 and i5 2500k cpu's. It doesn't matter what board they're installed on (have tried h67, z68, z77- gigabyte, asrock, asus). All with fresh installs of win7, updates and drivers including the latest Intel driver.

Just to add, the XBox360 will not display these new Cox MPEG4 channels until the XBox360 Media Update is downloaded and applied to the XBox for these MPEG4 channels to work on that device.

Without question a driver problem on the SB.

Bump.

Has anyone gotten a workaround for this? I find the fact that this has not been addressed yet pretty ridiculous.

I'm in the same boat as the rest of the folks here. I just bought a new laptop with integrated HD3000 graphics and am trying to use it with an HDHomerun Prime from Cox and their MPEG4 channels. I'm curious if anyone from Intel who can actually do something to help even reads these posts. Is there some other way to get a response from Intel? I'd even take a "We're not going to fix this problem" because then I could worry about finding something with a dedicated graphics card. This seems like a big enough issue to get fixed though.

Well, I looked today because I am about to go buy a new video cards since I can't get the Big Ten Network or some ESPN's in my area and there was an updated driver dated 9/1. I was estatic. I downloaded the zip and tried to manually update the driver. No go. So I downloaded the EXE and tried again. No go. Something about it "The computer does not meet the minimum requirements for installing the software. Off to Best Buy I go to get a video card since my game is on in a few hours.

Well, COX must have turned this on in Orange County, CA last week because I just started experiencing the exact thing the OP posted. Was not experiencing this issue prior to last week. Rebuilt the computer twice thinking it was a driver/ms patch problem, and kept getting the same issue. I have two other AMD APU based HTPC that are working just fine. Apparently I'll need to buy a third one considering this has been reported to Intel since May and no resolution yet.

Couple this issue with the HD 4000 video driver problem reported here /thread/30167?start=0 http://communities.intel.com/thread/30167?start=0 that I'm also experiencing; this will probably be my last Intel branded motherboard that I ever purchase.

Also getting "A display driver error - does not support playback of protected content" issue using an HD4000 and using the newest drivers.

Appears that the Intel HD graphic series are not handling the new Mpeg4/h264 formatted cable tv channels some cable providers are using now correctly. The channels work fine when using a Nvidia or AMD graphics processor I've found.

I also have the same issue with an Intel i5-3570K Ivy Bridge HD Graphics 4000 Processor. I am deeply conerned that I see post after post just like this one with multiple people complaining about the same issue and I see no response or fix since November of last year. Does Intel have a workaround I am unaware of? Do they intend to ignore the issue and never fix the problem? What exactly is going on and why doesn't Intel respond with either a fix or information about the issue? Many, out of frustration have decided to dump Intel Graphic chips altogether for a NON Intel discrete graphics solution. I do not have this luxury and have grown more and more frustrated as more and more cable provider stations are turning to this new technology.

They may in fact intend to ignore it I started this topic almost a year ago, and I have a ticket open with them on it. They collected a bunch of diagnostic info from my setup and then I never heard a word again. I've tried each driver update hoping to find it fixed, but problem persists. Sorry to hear your stuck with the issue too ...

This is a little crazy, going on three years now and this is still an issue. TiVo fixed it for their boxes in like 5 weeks, three years ago.

I just setup a new Haswell based PC ( all from EPP ) Asus maximus vi impact, 4770s cpu, 16gb of ram, 180gb ssd to boot, tried all three versions of the driver available to download ( previouts, current, and beta ).. the protected Mpeg-4, h.264 / security, fail to play. I either get a Display error, this display device cannot display protected content, or I get a black screen and I hear the audio just fine.

I have tried at both 60hz (59.9) and 30 , both at 1080p, and no workie.

Anyone have any tips on maybe a work around on this, or an older driver that may work, but that is unlikely..

Intel onboard graphics does not support mpeg4 playback. Not sure when it will or if it ever will.

Intel certainly dropped the ball on this one.

Anyone know if AMD's onboard graphics support mpeg4 playback. If so.... AMD may be the better choice for low power HTPC builds. As an added bonus the components are much cheaper.
