Come on Intel Don't break it - but get it fixed.

I am a computer consultant and have installed over a dozen Netgear PTV2000 and all worked until I had to install Intel Wireless Display PC software  2.2.14.0 and I have the latest video drivers on a Dell Vostro 3750.  When I try and connect, I get the the error  "Unable to Send desktop to remote display"    Why does Intel break things once they have a great product..... It absolutley floors me.  As an member of the Intel Technology Partner program I am frustratred as hell.  You have cost me billable hours and caused me to look bad in front of a customer.   That is sinful on Intels part.  I have the latest network drivers... the latest graphics drivers and the latest widi software... what is wrong.. Who can I contact to discuss. When are you going to get things fixed.

    Great Post. - Intel why no answer to this?  Looks like numerous people are having the same problem.

     

    I am evaluating the different competing technologies for product development and am very dissapointed in the WiDi complexity vs. how it is advertised. I have started with a new Dell XPS 15z and a Dlink Mainstage DHD-131 and get the same error unable to send desktop to remote display.  Support from any of the three hardware companies is also bad.  Does anybody wonder why Apple is the only company with increasing notebook sales?

     

    I have tried all suggestions (updated to latest drivers, re-installed software, modified advanced firewall settings, played with graphic and WiFi driver settings, etc.).  The My WiFi software shows the adapter blocked after it disconnects.  If you enable and start the connection, same error message.  Sometimes the F/W update will attempt, but then errors.

     

    Dlink support said there was not firmware on their device and finally suggested to just return the device - Incredible!  Dell support said they can only get Netgear adapters to work, but many posts from Netgear users have the same connection issues.  Is this a dead technology now?  Please respond as it seems the only choice is to return the hardware and move to other wireless streaming technologies and products for this feature.

     

    There are only 3 adapter hardware providers and all WiDi hardware / software is controlled by Intel.  How can this be so untested and screwed up?

    @dwyejj  First, I'm sorry to hear about your difficulties with WiDi.  The post above was resolved offline. We took a closer look at his configuration and the problem appeared to be his video driver. If you have an older video driver, WiDi will sometimes be unable to setup video capture, which results in the (rather generic) "Unable to send desktop to remote display."  I know you said you'd updated your drivers. Could you clarify whether you picked them up from Dell or from Intel's Driver page (http://www.intel.com/go/wirelessdisplayupdate)?

    Thanks for the reply.  I have now confirmed that the same problem exists with both the Dlink and Netgear’s newest devices.

     

    Regarding video drivers, I have downloaded the latest from the Dell site for both Intel and Nvidia.  When I run the driver check from the Intel site it says all drivers are the latest. (video, widi, & wifi)

     

    Also both adapters want to update firmware from 2.0.39.0  to 3.0.3.0 for the widi adapter, but this cant happen unless the device stays connected.

    Finally got WiDi working with the Netgear device.  The Intel graphics driver on the Dell site for the XPS 15z is newer than what is on the Intel download site, therefore the Intel scan indicated latest driver.  When down-revisioned to the driver from the Intel site it worked.  Never could get the Dlink Mainstage working though.  They are sending an RMA for a replacement so I will see if it was just a defective unit.

     

    Last week I read that Intel has partnered with a couple of TV mfg's to embed the adapter into the televisions.  Just a consumer opinion, but Intel needs to coordinate much better with the PC mfg's.   This would be much more intuitive for people if the WiFi interface was integrated with the WiDi software and had significantly better diagnostics to identify driver conflicts. 

     

    People expect to be able to go to the computer mfg's website for the latest drivers and dont expect automatic updates to conflict with a hardware feature like WiDi.  Bottom line Dell, Dlink, nor Intel really helped me fix this problem, and nobody in Best Buy, Geek Squad Desk, or Frys even knew how the adapters were different from streaming devices.

    Thanks for the confirmation. These devices are very similar in function. As you noted, they all want to update firmware, but require a stable WiDi connection to be established first.  For switchable graphics systems, you'll want to make sure that WiDi (WiDiapp.exe) runs only in Intel Graphics mode.  Normally this is set when the drivers and WiDi are installed at the factory, but you can run into this issue on upgrade or if you downloaded the software yourself.  I believe there is an NVidia control panel where you can specify to turn off switching when WiDi is running.
