    DZ68BC Audio Stuttering

    samthefish

Hi, I have the DZ68BC paired with an i7-2600k and intel SSD 510 running MS windows.  I've installed all the latest drivers for everying and have the latest windows 7 uupdates.   While this build has been "stable" there are  audio dropouts / stutters evert 1-2 min even when not much is going on.  This happens just playing music from google music.  When playing a game like COD MW3 it happens just as often.

I tried latencymon and it gives the highest measured kernel timer latency as 200763 microsecs! ouch!  (this right after a stutter).

it reports the highest ISR routine execution time as 105 us for dxgkrnl.sys and highest DPC routine at 722 usecs for the Nvidia Kernel mode Driver.

The Highest reported hard pagefault resolution time is 182392 us!

Any ideas?  I've tried disabling devices one at a time with no luck resolving it.

      Thanks, SamTheFish

Did you install the latest version of directx ?

Yes, verified that DirectX is the latest.  Thanks for the suggestion.

Are ALL of your BIOS settings at default values (obtained by going into BIOS setup and 'loading defaults' then saving out of there - ie no overclocking occurring)? If there is software overclocking elements of your system, also try setting that to default values and see how that goes.

Thanks for the suggestion - yes, everything at defaults.  I also uninstalled the "intel extreme overclocking utility" even though I wasn't using it as I saw that it has a driver running.

It turns out that the problem is resolved after removing Intel Desktop Utilities.  This program gives CPU temps / fan speeds etc.  I'm assuming it must have been probing something in a way the system didn't like!

                  Thanks all for the suggestions.

Just as a followup it turns out my problem only occurs when

1: I have my OCZ Synapse SATA III cache drive attached

                      and

                      2: IDU is running

remove either of those conditions and it doesn't happen.  I don't know if it's a problem with IDU or the Synapse firmware.  Thanks for all the suggestions/help.

To be simplistic, it sounds like a problem due to both in combination (but I don't know if any code in either is using the 'wrong' resources or is non-standard). I'm sure the teams/people responsible for both IDU and the Synapse could both benifit from being informed of the issue. Who knows, new drive firmware or new Dataplex Caching software or a new version of IDU (or all of these) which aleviates this audio problem may be the result in due course.

I guess this is the sort of issue you come up against when you're on the 'bleeding edge' - have you decided what you're going to do to get a resolution? Perhaps the supplier of the SSD has a similar/equivalent product which doesn't give the problem? Perhaps the IDU people can put together a test machine with this hardware and debug IDU to come up with a fix?

I had the EXACT same problem and it was driving me insane! Thank you!

I also have an SSD but I have an Intel SSD. You would think Intel's IDU and their own SSDs would work together.

                          Uninstalling IDU fixed the problem.

Thank samthefish - he's the one with the eagle eye that spotted the conflict. Now the question becomes what is Intel going to do about this? I'd report it to their tech support dept so they create a ticket and have it escalated for repair.

That's interesting it happened with an Intel SSD.  In my system I had 2 SSDs:  250 GB Intel SSD 510 and a 64GB OCZ Synapse SSD.  Only the Synapse SSD + IDU had the conflict, my Intel SSD + IDU worked fine when I had the OCZ drive disconnected.  Just on a lark you could try the other SATA controller for your drive, though if you're like me you just uninstalled IDU and went on with life :-)

If you have a "pure intel" setup stuttering I would think Intel could replicate it easily to look for a fix.

IDU is doing nothing more than regularly polling the HDDs/SSDs for health status (via S.M.A.R.T., which is also our source for HDD/SSD temperatures (if a temperature sensor is included in the drive)). It appears that (and this is only a guess on my part), when RST/SRT is enabled, these polling operations are causing the drive caches to be flushed, resulting in stuttering when the audio decoder stream runs out of available data. We tried significantly reducing the polling rate within a test build of IDU, but found that this only reduces the rate of occurrence, not eliminate the problem completely. I have asked the RST/SRT team to invstigate why our polling is causing this problem; I will update you once I have an analysis from them...

I thought Intel have a better support for there own products...
