Does the server power on? If so, have you updated to the latest firmware?
Also, depending on which chassis you use, solid amber might mean incorrect fan positioning on the motherboard.
Check the following link for hardware and firmware requirements to support Xeon processor 5400 series:
Also, the board requires a SSI 24-pin main power connector, and a SSI 8-pin 12V power connector.
Sorry for the delay in replying. The day job gets in the way
Yes the board powers on. The fans start (just to eliminate that as a potential part of the problem,
I have a fan plugged in on ALL the MB fan ports).
The status light flashes green for about 30 seconds, then goes solid amber. The TSP says:
BW/BIOS: Fatal Alarm. Post error/NMI event
FW Only: CPU/Terminator Missing, Fan, Temparature, Voltage, visible if fatal error causes a power down
The power supply has the the SSI 24 pin main connector, and the SSI 8 pin CPU connector.
What it doesn't have is the power supply "auxiliary signal connector" (I2C monitoring of the power supply).
So I'm assuming again that I have the wrong power supply, or the wrong CPUs. I could buy this:
for $200, but don't have any idea if that would actually solve the problem (e.g. could be the CPUs).
Since I never get anything on the video monitor, I can't check firmware / BIOS versions. I WISH I could get that far

What's the PBA# of your board?
Aaha. I was afraid of that. I got the CPUs, then bought this board to put them in. Bummer.
Thanks for the clarification!
