    DP55KG boot / shutdown pauses with Centos6 & SL6.1

    pchokola

So, I have been running Centos 5 (Red Hat clone) on a DP55KG motherboard flawlessly from the first version that was issued all the way to the current 5.6 version (The DP55KG motherboard is listed as being tested with version 5.4).  Now I want to try version 6, so I installed both Centos 6 and Scientific Linux 6.1, but during the boot up and shutdown process the system pauses (stalls) at various points for random times (1 to 5 minutes) each time I turn on and off the system.  There is no consistency at which boot or shutdown command the problem occurs and sometimes it does not occur at all.  I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this issue and/or has come up with a resolution.

I am currently running BIOS 5921, and tried to upgrade the BIOS, but I have Windows 7 loaded on another drive and if I try any of the newer BIOS's, it thinks that my add in network card is a removable device (Like plugging in a USB device); not good.  I did not test if it fixes the Linux problem, but I see no related issue fixes listed in the release notes.

We regret to inform you that no Linux distributions are supported on the Intel® Desktop Board DP55KG, so we would not be able to provide you with any assistance on this matter. I apologize for the inconvenience. Please refer to this site for a list of supported operating systems:

My question was addressed to the community, since Red Hat version 6 was never tested with this motherboard.

However, I did purchase this motherboard because of the following still current statement on Intel's website, which indicates that RHEL 5.4 installs successfully; in fact I am now running the latest 5.6 version without any problems whatsoever.  I do realize that the statement below is not the same as a full certification and that the DP55KG is not a server product.

I was able to fix the problem.  I added  "nohz=off highres=off" to the end of the kernel line in grub.conf and the pausing problem went away.
