I am looking at a computer with a pentium and one with the i3. The difference I see is only .1MHz in speed. I don't believe this is worth $50 more. What am I missing between the two processors?

Core i3 processors have HyperThreading technology, that should make your computer somewhat faster in multi-threading applications. They may have other additional features, like SSE4 or AES instructions, but it's not possible to tell exact differences without knowning what Core i3 and Pentium processors you're looking at.
