    Enabling Intel-VT for E5420 on S5000PSL motherboard

I'm trying to install windows Hyper-V on a new server - windows 2008 Std with Hyper-V

      Processors are dual Xeon E5420 @ 2.50Ghz

      Motherboard is S5000PSL.

There doesn't seem to be a bios option to enable Intel Virtualization Technology. Am I looking in the wrong place, or does this combination not support Intel-VT

          Hi Guest,

Your processor is VT enabled and since your motherboard supports your processor, it shouldn't give any problems however in case you think you are looking in a wrong place in BIOS, here's what you have to do:

Press F2 to access BIOS as your computer is powered on.

          Choose the second tab ADVANCED

          Select PROCESSOR CONFIGURATION

Drill down and select INTEL (R) VIRTUALIZATION TECHNOLOGY and then set the option to ENABLE.

However if you are still unable to find such an option, you might want to update your BIOS, Firmware and BMC.

For more information/support on your motherboard, BIOS; . Make sure you also go through TA(Technical Advisory) and FAQs.

            Hi,

I've got a very similiar problem: Two Xeon E5430 on a S5000PSL with the June Bios 89. After a jumper CMOS reset I see the option to enable VT in BIOS. I enable it, press F10, and after power on/off I hear some error beeps. When I enter BIOS again the enable VT option is not there anymore. In Win 2K8 Hyper-V cannot be installed. I can only see the Bios option again if I do a reset via the jumper again.

What is to do? For Hyper-V is the only reason for this server.

Another problem: There is a System device in Devicemanager that I have no drivers for.

            Thanks and bye,

              Hi Michael,

How many beeps do you hear and when exactly do you hear them i.e. After the BIOS reset, during the reboot pre-boot, etc etc

What exactly are the steps you are following when you reset the jumper? Kindly elaborate the steps as in, you set the jumper on reset, power on your computer, then power it down plugging out any source to PSU, reset the jumper back to normal and then power it again and access the BIOS?

Secondly, Hyper-V does have a processor in Win Server 2008, it won't install till your processor is VT enabled from BIOS.

And have you consulted the support website as I indicated earlier for S5000PSL looking into the FAQs and TA?

Make sure to do AC cycle after changing the VT enabled in BIOS setup.

Yeah! Though I thought you must have that in mind Guest but thanks to Kamalanathan for pointing that out just in case you missed out on that one.

                    Hi,

over here the same problem occured with my new hardware.

S5000PSL Motherboard with one Intel E5420 CPU Installed and no Hyper V Option in Bios is enabled. In Windows 2008 Hyper cannot be installed.

The Intel CPU Identification utility says that hyper v is not available on this CPU ?

So has anyone of you found a solution, yet ? Maybe an Biosupdate or something else ?

                    Thank you in advance

                      definitely BIOS updates.

The option in the BIOS will not be called hyper-v and you won't find any hyper-v references in the Procesor ID util. Hyper-v is just one of many virtualization implementations that use hardware assisted virtualization technology.

the option in the BIOS, after the update will be called: Intel(R) Virtualization Technology.
