I updated the Rapid Storage Technology (RST) driver ver 22.214.171.1244 driver for the ICH10R chip (controls a Raid 1 array for data) to ver 10.1.0.1008. In the process of updating, I received an error message "An error occurred while registering one or more components. Setup will exit".
I checked device manager and the proper driver version number is installed (i.e., ver 10.1.0.1008). But, when I reboot, Rapid Storage Technology is not launched. It has to be manually launched from the tray or if I wait for about 5 minutes, RST becomes active. I note also that the version of the RST console is the old version number, i.e., ver 126.96.36.1994, not the new version.
I know that RST has not been properly updated. But, how to I resolve this? Do I delete the Raid 1 array, uninstall and reinstall RST?
System details: X58 motherboard (Asus Rampage III Extreme), Windows 7 Ultimate, 64 bit OS.
i also had this type of problem which is retrying to intall Rapid Storage Technology with a version 10.1.0.1008 and found out that the problem occured after intalled INF Update Utility with a version 188.8.131.525....Currently, i only can intall previous version of Rapid Storage Techology.Hoping for newer version to solve this type of problem and hope it will solve yours too.
Very interesting, there are no downloads available! Perhaps someone at Intel has recognized that there is a problem? I was wondering if part of the problem in updating RST lies in the fact that maybe it is also necessary to update the INF Update Utility to the current ver. 184.108.40.2065
Does anyone think that this is contributing to the update problem?

In fact, I installed it on one of my system's yesterday and didn't see an issue. (Note: I chose not to install the ICC during the install)
This is very odd. I went to the site and it indicated no downloads were available as another poster pointed out.
The file you downloaded is dated 11/29/2010. The file that I downloaded previously, although the same version, was dated March 2011. So..........what's going on? Did they revert back to an earlier candidate but retain the same version number? I will download the version you have indicated. Hopefully, it will work without any more headaches. I have yet to resolve this problem. I uninstalled the previous version of RST and still get the error message when I try to install the current version. I am wondering if it is necessary to update the Chipset Utiliity Software in order to update RST.
Another question I have is why is it that some people are having this problem updating RST and others don't. Finally, if I can't find a solution to this problem, is there anyone at Intel whom I can contact?

Yeah, that solves the issue for me.
I suspect the cause is INF Update Utility v220.127.116.115 changing the Intel SATA AHCI Controller driver to v18.104.22.1681, incompatible with RST v10.1.0.1008"
I did not update the INF utility. I was using ver 22.214.171.1245. Did you have the same problem using INF Update utility ver 126.96.36.1991?

Intel® Rapid Storage Technology 10.1.0.1008 files for 64-bit OS - used to preinstall RAID driver (F6 during Windows* setup),
Date 12/15/2010 Version 10.1.0.1008..
After the driver was installed, which RST file did you install?
