BSOD immediately after installing driver for Intel HD Graphics 3000

Relevant system specs:

  • CPU/graphics: i5-2500k (HD Graphics 3000)
  • Mobo: ASRock H67M-ITX/HT
  • boot disk: Intel X25-M SSD
  • OS: Windows 7 64 bit

Boots fine with default VGA driver. After I install the graphics drivers and restart, I get a BSOD during boot up (error is irql_not_less_or_equal; don't have the other details at hand). I am certain that the proximate cause of the BSOD is the installation of the graphics drivers because I have reproduced the problem half a dozen times. (After boot fails, I have Windows 7 repair itself, which it does by restoring to a state before I installed the graphics drivers.) I installed the version of the drivers that shipped with my motherboard, as well as the most recent version (dated 3/10, I think) from Intel's website.

Any suggestions?

i have the same problem. did you install windows 7 in UEFI mode?

i found out that this could be the issue. after installing windows without UEFI it worked fine for me.

It's not clear to me whether I can install without UEFI. Basic system settings for my motherboard are only available through the "UEFI SETUP UTILITY" (http://download.asrock.com/manual/H67M-ITX.pdf http://download.asrock.com/manual/H67M-ITX.pdf). However, there is some indication that I can select whether to use UEFI when booting from the device with the Windows install files:

Choose the item "UEFI:xxx" to boot in UEFI Setup Utility > Boot > Boot Option # 1.

("xxx" is the device which contains your Windows installation files. Normally it is an optical drive.)You can also press to launch boot menu at system POST and choose the item "UEFI:xxx" to boot

I assume that's what you mean. I just looked for my optical drive in the boot list and don't recall whether I picked the "UEFI" version or not (or whether there were 2 options available at all).

Does anyone know whether there's a common way to tell whether I am in UEFI mode now? e.g., from inside Windows? In any case, Intel (and/or Microsoft) need to fix this bug, and I'm unwilling to reinstall the operating system as a workaround.

hi i have the same problem with core i3 HD 2k graphic drivers

msi tells me the problem would be hardware related... any idea on how to debug this to confirm the problem to be UEFI related?

I had the same problem with UEFI.

I could fix the problem by installing SP1.

Please install SP1 and all updates first.

Then install VGA driver.

Enjoy!

Thanks very much, kaze.

Just to be clear, as you understand it, my options are to either (1) install Windows 7 SP 1 and all other updates, followed by the graphics driver or (2) re-install Windows 7 without using UEFI? (I would rather not reinstall Windows 7, for the obvious reasons.)

This may not be the problem but I bring it up because it's happened to me three times when downloading from the Intel site. Check the size of the file you download with size listed for the driver. I've had downloads cut short. I'm sure if I had tried to load the driver(s), there would have been a problem. Two were BIOS updates and one was the graphics driver.

I'd like to say that this thread has been EXTREMELY helpful.

I have a brand new i3-2105 with an ASRock H61/U3S3 motherboard and everyone I went to install the Intel graphics drivers it would BSOD upon reboot.

My method to getting this working was to boot the windows install from AHCI as previously suggested, then installing the chipset drivers, rebooting, then installing sp1 manually, then rebooting, THEN installing the graphics drivers.

These steps are what helped me. Hopefully no one else has this issue anymore.

Thank you for the feedback on this matter. We have not seen a report on that specific issue and the generic drivers in our site after loading SP1 or disabling UEFI, however I will forward this information to the research team in case this could be related to the drivers.

Additional information.

This is UEFI issue.

This problem is not reproduced when I install win7 with MBR.

If you have ASROCK M/B, power on and press F11 key.

You will find AHCI:DVD and UEFI:DVD in the list, so please select AHCI:DVD to boot from install disk.

I've excatly the same problem.

Just to make aure I understand here... if I disable UEFI in my MB, I don't need to roll back 2291, 2321 will work, right?

If so, how can I disable UEFU in Gigabyte BIOS screen? I don't see such option there.

Any help will be highlly appreciated!

Try using a previously version of the video driver...

Solved the issue for me. The newest video driver have a bug that ends in BSOD.

Had a similar issue with the ASRock H67M mATX / i5-2400 / SATA III Seagate / Win7 Pro 64-bit.

After the video driver was loaded the system would intermittently BlueScreen. I sent the mobo back for defective video hardware and received a new one. NO issues with the BSOD after the video driver is loaded now...

Im having the same issue. Have you all got asrock boards? Im on an asrock extreme3 gen3.

Is this a UEFI issue in general or is it limited to asrock?

I had the same problem. I have i3 with hd3000 and nvidia g610m 1gb dedicated. You have to install Service Pack 1 for windows 7 (update directly from Windows update if you have licensed windows). Before you install SP1 you have to disable Intel HD3000 from Device Manager/ Display adapters (with right click). Next enable the driver and update it also with right click.

NVIDIA OPTIMUS DOESN'T WORK WITHOUT SP1!

I have this exact same problem ... except today is March 4, 2014 !!

The very latest Intel drivers, dated January 2014, cause BSOD, same conditions.

Unrecoverable. Must go back to safe mode, delete the driver in its entirety, and revert to VGA.

Tried a different motherboard, different RAM, many deep parity check scans, you name it.

Consistent failure, and has been so, has never worked correctly, for ANY of the HD drivers issued.

Would be PLEASED to SEND this computer to Intel, at MY EXPENSE, if someone there would figure out what's wrong and fix it.

I have two of these computers and they both operate the same.

i5 processor i5-3470 @ 3.2 GHz, '2500' graphics

Win7PRO-64

Gigabyte MB: GA-B75M-D3H ver 1.1

That was indeed the driver I just downloaded, as suggested by your colleague, in another thread.

As predicted, the computer BSOD'd as Windows tried to boot.

Attached is the crash information.

Note that I cannot provide the minidump file or the related XML file.

After Windows recovered, these files are not present in the indicated directory. Perhaps I am not seeing them for a reason I do not know about, however, other similar files are there.

Because this problem consistently happens, and has happened for each of the previous two or three revisions of driver sent out by Intel, I must conclude that you do not have a suitable test environment to catch this problem in your QA process.

Therefore, I volunteer to send you a Gigabyte motherboard of the same model and revision that I have. You can install the same model of i5 processor on it, RAM and so forth, and I am sure you have a copy of Win7Pro. That way, you can re-create the problem in your own lab. It's quite consistent.

Have you ever replaced the processor? Did you test another processor model on your system?

I appreciate your continued effort to resolve this longstanding issue.

Indeed the processor is well within the 3 year time-frame.

I have not tried another processor on this computer (I have no other socket 1155 CPU).

I have not replaced this processor.

To be clear, and as discussed in another thread: This processor has passed the Intel test program.

I also understand that tests of these sorts cannot always be fully conclusive.

I would be happy to test another processor, and if this one is found to be defective, return it.

I would be willing to purchase another and known-good CPU using socket 1155, to install on the 2nd Gigabyte motherboard, to effect tests thereof.

I would also be happy to run additional diagnostics, load 'beta' drivers, or perform other nondestructive tasks, if it would help identify and resolve the issue.
