Poor visual experience with Ubuntu 10.10

I currently use Ubuntu 10.04 on an Asus X51L laptop which uses the GMA 3100 graphics and since my purchase of the system in October 2008 am very pleased with the experience.

With the advent of Ubuntu issuing version 10.10 I am unable to view the data on the screen properly. No matter what I have tried I have been unable to improve the view. My native resolution is 1024 x 768 (4:3) and the problem is when it displays on the laptop screen there is about three quarters to one inch of black space on the left and right hand of the screen. All the data will display correctly from the top to bottom but squeezes everything on each side of the screen.

I have tried various questions on the Ubuntu forums without any positive feedback.

Has anyone else experienced this problem and how did they resolve it?

Your assistance will be most appreciated.
