Ok, so heres the deal. I just recently bought a new motherboard, an ASUS P5G41-M LX2/GB. It has full intel core 2 "support", which includes quad and duo. So I installed everything, updated BIOS, reinstalled all the audio drivers and video card drivers, but when I enter into Device Manager, there is no "Processor" tab. In addition, instead of there being two windows in CPU in Taskmanager as before, there's only one. Can anyone help?

Oh, I just figured out the base of the problem, but I screwed up trying to fix it. It's the hal file, and that goes into windows, not intel, so no one can help me here, correct?

Afraid I have the CD for home edition, but the XP Professional came with the computer already installed. It's just that after the motherboard was replaced, it somehow switched from multiprocessor ACPI to Standard PC. If i reinstall the OS though, won't all of the files on the HD be erased? Or at least not able to be retrieved? Also, another question, in my device manager, why is there no tab for "processors"? It's not there, any remedies?

Was teh motherboard you replaced the one that Windows was originally instaleld on a different model? If so that is your porblem, you can't in geeneral do that with Xp, it does stuff like this. Maybe some windows expert or or microsoft forums could help you to solve it without reinstalling but i can't...
Yes if you reinstall windows you will loose all your data, so you should back it up.
Basically when you install XP on a system, you install drivers for that specific motherboard/chipset/components. So when you changed teh motherboard the operating system will get "confused". As i said it may be possible somehow remove all traces of teh previous drivers and install the appropriate ones but i couldn't telly you how sorry. I still think it will be quicker and easier for you to back up all your data and then doa fresh install of windows.

Here is what you can try:
1. Open Device Manager and expand Computer
2. Right click Standard PC and select Update Driver
3. Select No, not this time => Install from a list or specific location (Advanced) => Don't Search.
4. Select ACPI Multiprocessor PC in the list. Uncheck the "Show compatible hardware" box if you don't have it in the list
5. Click Next and reboot.
You may want to backup your data first, just in case Windows doesn't boot correctly with the new HAL. If that happens go to safe mode and switch back to Standard PC. If you can't even boot to safe mode then a repair installation would be required.

I clicked update driver, all that...yadda yadda yadda, and when I unchecked the show compatible hardware still there's only standard pc. I swear i saw halmacpi.dll and the ntkrnl files on the system folder, it show up? and what do you mean by "click no"?

Oops, seems the old trick works in Windows 2000 but not in Windows XP... See the following MSKB for more details:

I'm afraid a reinstall is the only option huh? now i need to get the xp cd...i'll report back later.

Alright, long time no see. Just bought Windows 7, have to upgrade some day anyway. Installed smoothly, ACPI based PC popps up, both cores recognized. Final Question: what would be a recommended processor I could buy with a slightly tight budget (less than 110 dollars would be fine), 1.8 GHZ duo is pretty weak now..
