comparing two mobile CPUs (T5500 vs T7300)

    el_weazel

      Hi

      I have a Toshiba Satego P100 10F.

      here some specs:

      CPU Core 2 DUO T5500 2x1.66 (PBGA479, PPGA478)

      2GB RAM

      7900GS 512MB

This notebook ist going to be 3 years old and it can't handle the newest CAD programs and games as well as when it was brand new.

A friend of mine has got a broken notebook with a C2D T7300 (2x2.00) which I could have.

Recording to the Intel CPU list the T7300 should fit on my mainboard.

The exact line says: "Sockets supported: PBGA479, PPGA478"

Does that mean that a T5500 (or a T7300) can fit in a socket 479 as well as in a 478. Or does it say that there are 2 socket versions of each processor?

//Don't worry. I opened my notebook many times before. I know what I'm doing

I hope you can help me

      Thanks!!

The T7300 won't work in your laptop. T5500 is a socket M processor, and the T7300 uses different socket - socket P. If your laptop motherboard has socket 479 then the T7300 will physically fit in it, but won't work in it. There is also a chance that your motherboard has real socket M, then the T7300 won't even fit into it.

            hmm, are you sure?

This table shows the same sockets at both CPUs.

            http://ark.intel.com/Compare.aspx?ids=29760,27253,

A system information tool on my computer tells my that my socket is "479 Ball uFCBGA / 478 Pin uFCPGA"

So I have a socket M (=478?). And socket P has 478 pins as well but doesn't match with socket M?

            thanks, regards

Can you tell me which CPUs are compatible with my mainboard? I thought is was the whole T7xxx and T5xxx series.

ok, I think I found an answer to my problem...

I've got a Socket M CPU. And found some compatible cpus to my mainboard:

              Merom-2M

              Core 2 Duo T5300          1733     2048     533

              Core 2 Duo T5500          1667     2048     667
              Core 2 Duo T5600          1833     2048     667

              Merom

              Core 2 Duo T5200          1600     2048     533

              Core 2 Duo T5500          1667     2048     667
              Core 2 Duo T5600          1833     2048     667
              Core 2 Duo T7200          2000     4096     667
              Core 2 Duo T7400          2166     4096     667
              Core 2 Duo T7600          2333     4096     667

aargh, exactly the T7300 is a socket p one.

So I'm looking out for a T7-(2/4/6)-00 on ebay.

Please check your processor first. There were two versions of the T5500 - in micro-PGA and micro-BGA packages. It's likely that you have a micro-PGA package, but if you have a micro-BGA package, soldered on the board, then you won't be able to upgrade it.

thanks for your reply and your hint

Can you tell me how I can be sure which socket module is in my laptop?

I don't know where to look.

As I told you I opened my notebook a couple times before. I also renewed the thermal paste on the cpu/nb/gpu/vram.

But I didn't even tried to get the cpu out if its socket.

hmm, I guess the easiest way to get it out is to open it once more. costs me 1.5h ^^

Since you already cleaned it / replaced the thermal paste then maybe you don't need to open it. If you remember that the chip was in a socket then you have micro-PGA version. If it was on the board, without the socket, then it's a BGA version. You can also detect the version from the S-Spec number (if you know it, or you can look at the CPU itself), or from the markings on the CPU: BGA version has "LE80537" on the top, and PGA version has LF80537. CPU-Z may show package/socket type, but I don't know if this information can be trusted or not.

                      Thanks a Lot !!

Yeah, I can remeber. There was a socket like on a normal desktop mainboard.

                      problem solved, great help!
