    RMM3 Issues

    zshe803

      Hi,

I am having a few issues with RMM3 modules that are installed in 2 servers.

To start with my network configuration is as follows:

      Baseboard NIC(Lan Channel 1)
      IP: 192.168.0.201
      Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
      Default Gateway: 0.0.0.0
      Local Settings
      IP: 192.168.0.25
      Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
      RMM NIC(Lan Channel 3)
      IP: 192.168.1.201
      Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
      Default Gateway: 0.0.0.0
In this configuration I am able to access the RMM web page via the Baseboard NIC, but not the RMM NIC, I am also unable to ping the machine on 192.168.1.201. What would be causing this and how do I fix it so I can use both NIC's?
Another issue I am having is with the Remote Console.
The issue is that the server gets into a state that whenever I try and launch the Remote Console, Jviewer pops up a messages box saying "Error reading video data". Once it is in this state the only way that I am able to fix this issue is physically removing power from the server.
There are 2 methods I have identified so far that cause this issue:
      1. The remote machine goes into sleep while a Remote Console session is open.
      2. The server is shut down(but still has power) while a Remote Console session is still open.
I really either need a fix for this issue or at minimum a way to get the Remote Console working again once I end up in this state as I do not always have physical access to the machine.
      Regards,
      Zac

First thing i would recommend is to upgraded you FW stack to the most current BIOS, BMC ME and SDR. The big one in the group for RMM3 is BMC since the BMC FW must be at the same revision as the RMM3 FW or very strange things can happen. The RMM3 FW is updated automatic during the BMC flash process, but sometime folks don't install the RMM till after they have updated the code. I would recommend reflash flashing the RMM3 / BMC combination installed even if both are at the same level but had been flashed in different systems.

2nd questing is what mother board (s) are in the servers?

The RMM was installed after the other firmware updated had been done. I know the BMC is running the latest version 00053 as far as I can tell. I am not sure what is on the RMM module.

I have the S5520UR motherboard in these systems.

If the RMM3 was not in the system , it likley has the shipping default (33 i think).

Reflash your BMC and you should see the from \ to values as it updates.

Most likley will fix your issues

I performed the BMC/RMM update this morning but am still experiencing the same issues.

The RMM was on version 00.40, but has now been updated to 00.53.

I still get the Remote Console becoming inaccessible, one easy way to reproduce this is to unplug the network cable while a Remote Console session is open.

Also I am still unable to ping or access at all the system on the RMM NIC interface at 192.168.1.200

We have exactly the same issue with RMM3 remote console on S5520URR board (SR1625URR system). We applied firmware update from 0.40 to 0.53 via EFI shell.

I attach all the version information. RMM3 console did work for several times, but now it's giving this "Error reading video data!". Tried from different OS (Win7, WinVista, Linux) and networks (LAN, WAN). Didn't notice though whether this due to update or not.

Thanks Zac, I will give the unplugging the cable on an open session a try.

(Hardest part fixing an problem is when no one can reproduce it)

Not sure if this was the right way to do, but it helped. Remote console works fine again on 00.53 firmware.

                      1. Reset BIOS settings to default (F9)
                      2. Reset settings to factory defaults via EFI shell using this utility.

                        Hi Paktas,

I did reset my BIOS settings to default after I did the RMM/BMC updates.

Which tool/command did you use to reset the other settings to factory default in the EFI Shell?

                        Zac

OK, I downloaded and installed syscfg for Windows.

                          I then ran:

                          1. syscfg /rfs

                          2. syscfg /rbmc

This has fixed my issues with Remote Console.

I am however still having issues with accessing the system via the RMM NIC Interface.

                          My configuration is as follows:

                          Baseboard LAN Channel 1

                          IP: 192.168.0.200

                          Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

                          Gateway: 0.0.0.0

                          Remote Laptop

                          IP: 192.168.0.22

                          Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

                          Gateway: 0.0.0.0

                          RMM NIC

                          IP: 192.168.1.200

                          Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

                          Gateway: 0.0.0.0

                          Remote Laptop

                          IP: 192.168.1.22

                          Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

                          Gateway: 0.0.0.0

Everything works fine on the Baseboard NIC, but nothing works on the RMM NIC, I am unable to even ping to 192.168.1.200

                          Any ideas?

                          Regards,

This is the 2nd case I know of that was resolved by restoring the BMC to factory default and resetting it up.

There are several tool that can reset the BMC (syscfg -rfs or FWPIAUPD -setdef)

Once "fixed" I would love to hear if anyone start haveing issues again.

I was able to intermittly reproduce the error with the network cable unplugging (seems to clear it self on a reboot)

Intel's software engineers are going have to take a look.

Can you check on your RMM3 web screen under System Information -- FRU Information for the Board Part/Model Number?

                                Doc,

although we were able to fix it, it came back again with "error reading video data!" on Remote Console.

I am starting to feel that this is really to KVM sessions not being closed properly. Will double check this theory.

Zac, we ran only "syscfg /rfs" but via EFI shell, not Windows. We also had problems pinging RMM NIC, but restoring configuration helped - it's accessible again. Although I've got a felling it will come again. We are not using Managament board IP (it's 0.0.0.0).
