Intel 965 graphics driver Windows 7 (Vostro 1510) not working properly

Hi there, I am having a very odd problem, but googling I noticed I am not the only one (only I couldn't find any solution).

About 4 months ago I installed W7 (clean install) and got the graphics driver from the Intel website, everything went fine for a while. Then the screen started freezing and the system rebooted after a blue screen. The message said there was some problem at a "igxprd32" file. I decided to do nothing by then since I believed this would be solved when I reinstalled W7 from the beginning. Only the problem got worse and worse until the system froze right after complete boot, or not more than 15 minutes after started.

Then I installed W7 again (clean install again), got the updated drivers but the problem persisted. I tried virtually everything, even running the Vista drivers instead but nothing seems to work. I can only use the computer if running a standard graphics driver, but in this case the resolution is awful as expected, and there is no more gaming

May somebody help me out?

Thanks!

You have a hardware problem of some kind. I suspect your monitor or hard drive but it could be anything. Are there any other symptoms? Someone else previously reported this error here I believe.

Hi dude, I have indeed seen many people reporting this but no satisfatory answer.

The general symptom is that the screen blinks several times than freezes, sometimes when it is blinking I can notice a notification message saying that the driver has collapsed. After this, the system is stuck and I have to restart. Only rarely the system restarts by its own, that's when I get the blue screen.

I have tried to install Vista instead (which was on the computer when I bought it, and for which I can find all drivers on Dell website) and at least the computer is usable, but the driver has crashed sometimes and the games won't work.

Thanks for your message, I hope somebody else may help me.

Same problem on Dell Inspiron 1525 with Windows 7 Utimate 64-bit (same chipset). I have installed a clean Windows 7 64 and as soon as the windows installation try to "check graphic performance" the problem starts. I have tried many many drivers include one old driver for Vista, with no result. The only way i got to keep my Windows stabled (to do this post) was remove the intel graphic driver and install Standard VGA driver that comes with windows.

It doesn't even sound like the Vostro is still in shape for web surfing so the recommendation of a cheap i3 gaming system as a second computer may not be suitable. I'm still waiting for full Win 7 drivers for my printer so going from Vista 32 through Windows 7 64 bit to Windows 8 seems unlikely for me on a DG45ID. Even the upcoming nVidia 450 or 440 is less appealing to me with recent developments since I game very little. The only similar symptom I have is Windows experience index sometimes leaves Aero off for the remaining tests but returns when done with GMA 4500. Minor hardware changes have fixed everything else and may have fixed that. It looks like my 965WH will stay retired.

I don't know if I made a confusion but now the driver that has been crashing is igdkmd32.sys...

I cannot use any Aero theme on W7 or play any game.

Anything else?

It sounds like your hardware isn't as healthy as it was for your initial installation or your installation methods could be improved (no insult, anyone can get lackadaisical with time). You don't have the Intel installation disk which reveals the order of driver installation. INF, audio (test), graphics (evaluate with Windows Experience Index) and LAN (leave disconnected, but speeds up startup and later conflicts). At least as likely is any hardware upgrades about 4 months ago such as monitor, cables, drives, add-in cards etc. Dell has slightly different motherboards and connections so the chipset drivers might be better than the motherboard drivers if you can't use Dell drivers. The standard driver is not actually bad so more hardware information would help. Start looking at a new system unless you really like only having one computer. Check your hard drive with CHKDSK in windows or use a utility provided by the manufacturer.

Hi pal, I didn't really understand what you mean, I have just installed W7 again and the computer is working but it will crash if I ask it any complex graphic operation.

I have already run dell diagnostics on hardware but all tests passed.

What other information can I give?

thanks!

Sorry for the wordy response. Maximum PC determined that Dell optimizations do change performance so your installation may differ. That is not your problem. Graphics is still dependent on the hard drive for virtual memory. Also if you have bad sectors in the area of your OS install in particular, degradation of performance can be expected. What did the Dell diagnostics tell you about the hard drive, beyond pass. I don't know if that gives info comparable to Intel Desktop Utilities or other utilities. Passing SMART may change after running CHKDSK. At first don't let it make changes.

If you're expecting a fix in the blink of an eye, I don't even support my own 965 any more even though it worked fine with Vista 64.

The diagnostics said everything was OK, and actually I installed Vista and W7 in two different partitions and both systems are giving problem...

Try installing on another drive on another port like 3 or 4 and dual boot.

You shouldn't have any warranty remaining so you can say if you installed a GTX 490 graphics card and are having problems now. If so, remove it now and use the onboard X3000.

I can only hope someone else does. Now I start to think of your memory, the memory hub and I/O controller hub. Do you have any temps for the hubs or fan speed and temp of the CPU? It's best to compare those and your voltages with original values. A short somewhere on your connections could make things increasingly unstable and erratic so anything you can swap out would help.

After some surfing of the web and this site I see similar problems with i3 systems so the common feature seems to be Windows 7 but the i3 is more complex, particularly when a graphics card is present. When adding a new system for the spare monitor I had, I reached the point of investigating i3 graphics switching and bailed. When you refer to complex graphics I assume you mean gaming but even business apps and web surfing can be demanding. 2D graphics performance for future Windows OS (and development for it in my case) can be inadequate in GMA 4500 and apparently modern ATI cards. It may be useful to visit Microsoft Answers to see if they are phasing in new graphics method. The time spent on hardware has made me out-of-date.

Dude thanks for your research. The main issue here is that the same problem pops out in Windows Vista (and the laptop has come with it installed). The system freezes sometimes even when I am not doing anything at all...

I am contacting Dell this week, because I am almost sure this is one of the problems that computers have and nobody knows why... I am quite sure I will have to change the motherboard... let's see.

See ya!

I didn't realize this was a laptop; very different and I should have checked. Most suspect the drivers but hardware is likely even on newer systems. I just read a BeHardware article on cheap graphics and they mention the Intel MAD instructions need to be translated for game software which don't employ them. That would be a symptom or contributing factor rather than a cause I suspect.

Hi Dudes,

could be the installation of Windows 7 64-bit damaged the video card? I have just experienced the same that zoidberg said this weekend. I have installed back windows xp 32bit but the probem with the video still occurs and it was not happend before. Its very clear that is a video card problem (i dont think it could be the memory (i checked that) or hard disk swapping in bad blocks). First i suspected of driver, but now for sure it isn't. zoidberg, plz keep us updated of you contact (and possible correction) with Dell.

best regards.

Hi Gabera,

I am more and more convinced that this is a hardware failure. The problem started suddently and got worse as time passed, and since I made everything possible with the drivers, I don't believe this is a software issue.

I just called Dell this morning and after reporting everything I did, I ended up signing a prolonged warranty period (which of course cost me lots of money ) and I will ask them to change the motherboard. This is probably going to solve it, I will post what happened here as soon as done.

What I am totally pissed off is that the failure started when the computer was still on the original warranty period but they didn't want to check it without extending the warranty first.

By the way, couldn't Intel inform if there has been some problem with this lot of chipset? It seems many users are reporting this issue.

Looking forward.

I still have a related issue of that myself. I searched dual boot of Vista and Win7 and nothing of concern to report at least with Win 7 beta. I am curious how your disks show up in Disk Management and whether any new noises appeared after you added Win7. Presumably Vista is Disk 0 and Win7 is Disk 1. Shouldn't matter but one of mine got stuck at Disk 1 with only Win7. I think it is only a nuissance issue.
