I know this suonds NUTS but check for Virus , My daughters laptop did the same thing last year , once I found the virus isolated it and removed it reinstalled drivers through device manger , worked fine , the virus was deleating drivers for mechanical devices.
Thanks for the feedback. It turns out the registry got corrupt and when I installed the second DVD player it was the same brand so the registry stayed the same. Anyway, I eventually figured it out and got everything back up and running. Thanks for taking the time to respond.
While you are Ironing out the bugs you might check if there is a firmware update for the DVD drive ??
