Hi folks,
Just putting together a new PC build. I am using the i5 CPU with the stock cooler and the cooling strip that is pre-applied. The motherboard is an ASUS P7P55D.
I'm actually at a loss, the CPU feels fine and the bios is running fine, fan speed going at 1900 rpm. I wouldn't have thought there was a problem only for the temp reading in the BIOS. Could it be a sensor problem? Could some new thermal paste help?
I'm really worried that my new CPU is already fried and am afraid to turn on the PC again.

Hello;
The maximum temperature for your processor should be 72.7°C. If your BIOS is reading a temperature of 98 °C, this is not normal.
As first troubleshooting step try to update the system BIOS you may need to contact the desktop board manufacturer in order to do this.
Also try to reseat the processor and the fan and make sure that the fan-heatsink are properly seated, there is a installation video that you may want to check:

For more troubleshooting steps I recommend to check the following URL:

If the problem continues you try the processor on a different desktop board or try another processor on the desktop board.

Thanks for your reply,
I have the problem under control now I think. I bought a new fan and things are running between 33 and 40 deg celcius now. It may well be that just re-seating the fan did the job.
Thanks again!
