    catch-22 on BIOS/CPU compatibility?

I'm ready to place an order for a DH57JG motherboard and a i5-680 CPU, but Intel says the 680 needs the 0537 BIOS which was only released in May.  I can't guarantee that the board I receive won't have the old BIOS.  My question is, when Intel says that the combination of 680 CPU and old BIOS is "incompatible," does that mean black screen of death, or does that mean it will run in a degraded fashion that is good enough to allow me to update the BIOS?  I don't mean to split hairs on "incompatible" meaning "incompatible," but it's rather important to know if I would need a spare CPU just to get the BIOS update to run.
