If you use VNC, you will find out that tightvnc and gnome do not play nice when you type 's' or 'm'. The workaround is to kill all programs called 'indicator-applet' (there were 2 in my case). Then all of my problems went away.
Great tip! You can also solve this by simply right clicking on the power button icon located at the top right of the Ubuntu desktop when you are VNC'd in and choosing "remove from panel".

You do not need to remove the applet anymore, just update to the latest packages and everything is fine
