    netwtw06.sys and bsod

      Laptop with Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 8265 wireless LAN adapter is experiencing intermittent blue screens since upgrading from Windows 10 1607 to 1709.  The actual bug check codes vary;  it's a mix of c2, 1C6, A, 7E, 50, 139.  The errors mostly occur when machine is undocked connecting wirelessly to the LAN.

       

      Suspecting the wifi drivers to be an issue, we enabled driver verifier with the setting "NDIS/WIFI" and scanning all the Intel drivers.  Analysis of the dmp files points to the netwtw.06sys driver.   Observation is similar to thread:  BSOD with netwtw06.sys when switching AP.  Machine appears to blue screen when switching between wireless access points.  Any insight into what specific action/command could be triggering this?  Note:  the latest version of the driver is installed.  Version 20.70.3.3.  Thanks.

          In order to try to fix this problem, we recommend a clean installation of the wireless driver provided by the manufacturer of the laptop, on the link below you will find the instructions of how to do it:

              Followed steps to perform a "clean" install of the wireless driver.  No difference.  Laptop still generates a blue screen under the same test conditions (with Verifier enabled and moving from one WAP to another).

               

              Tried to download the "generic" wifi-driver, but the link simply points to the version of the driver that we are already using.  Even though the version of the PROSet software is 20.80.0, the driver itself is still version 20.70.0.  Following text is cut from the link.

               

              Intel PROSet/Wireless WiFi Software version = 20.80.0

              Driver version = 20.80.0.5 for Windows 10 for 9461, 9462, 9560, 9260 adapters.

              • Driver version = 20.70.1.1 for Windows 10 for 18265, 8265, 18260, 8260 adapters.
              • Driver version = 19.51.14.1 for Windows 10 for 3168, 3165, 7265 (Rev. D), and 17265 adapters.
              • Driver version = 18.33.13.4 for Windows 10 for 7265 (Rev. C), 7260 and 3160 adapters.

                For testing purposes what we can try is a roll back of the driver in order to confirm if the problem gets fixed that way.
                Please enter device manager, select "Network Adapters", right click on the driver and select "Properties", look for the "Driver" tab and select "Roll Back". PLease let us know the results once get the chance.

                  We started with 20.40.x when we initially upgraded to 1709.  We went through the typical "let's update the drivers" exercise when we first encountered the BSOD.  We have since upgraded to 20.50.x, 20.60.x, and now 20.70.x and still continue to have issues.  Is there no other way to enable some additional log settings to troubleshoot this problem?

                    In regard to your question, the next thing to do will be to get in contact directly with the manufacturer of the laptop, so they can verify if there is an option to enable additional log settings and for them to provide further suggestions and technical support for this scenario.
