AFBR-709DMZ-IN3 sfp  Not Detecting In X710-DA4

    Eugene.Verster

we have recently just upgraded our network to a 10GB network.

one of our main servers is a poweredge R730xd

the network card is a X710-DA4

we purchased the SFP+ module from the same suppliers and the part they gave us is AFBR-709DMZ-IN3.

when reading i see that this is not on the supported list:

Compatible SFP+ Modules, SFP Modules, and Cables for Intel® Ethernet...

however this is an intel part and the item on the supported list is the AFBR-709DMZ-IN2

would this make a difference? do i specifically need to source the AFBR-709DMZ-IN2 module?

incidentally other modules that we purchased for some other servers "SFP-10GSR-85 HU" are detected and appear to work.

the problem i have is an excessive amount of FCS Errors resulting in a highly unreliable link.

      please assist

          Hello Eugene.Verster,

Thank you for posting in Intel Wired Ethernet Communities.  It is recommended to use the same product code as listed in the compatible modules.  For us to continue to assist you please provide an output from the command that applies to your system.  For windows use PowerShell and enter the command Get-IntelNetAdapter or ethtool -i <devname> in Linux terminal.

              Hello Eugene.Verster,

Please use the Linux command ethtool -i <devname> for VMware ESXi 6.5.  Provide the output from the terminal.  Please also identify the part number on the X710-DA4 network adapter?  There is a white sticker on the physical adapter as seen in this link.

                Hi Daniel,

                the command you sent does not work, however i found esxcli network nic list, this displays as follows;

Name    PCI Device    Driver  Admin Status  Link Status  Speed  Duplex  MAC Address         MTU  Description

                ------  ------------  ------  ------------  -----------  -----  ------  -----------------  ----  ---------------------------------------------------------

                vmnic0  0000:01:00.0  i40en   Up            Up            1000  Full    24:6e:96:7a:92:d0  1500  Intel Corporation Ethernet Controller X710 for 10GbE SFP+

                vmnic1  0000:01:00.1  i40en   Up            Down             0  Half    24:6e:96:7a:92:d2  1500  Intel Corporation Ethernet Controller X710 for 10GbE SFP+

                vmnic2  0000:01:00.2  i40en   Up            Up            1000  Full    24:6e:96:7a:92:d4  1500  Intel Corporation Ethernet Controller X710 for 10GbE SFP+

                vmnic3  0000:01:00.3  i40en   Up            Down             0  Half    24:6e:96:7a:92:d6  1500  Intel Corporation Ethernet Controller X710 for 10GbE SFP+

there is a no name brand plugging into vmnic1, and the intel one plugged into vmnic3

                  Hello Eugene.Verster,

Please try to use the command: esxcli network nic get –n vmnic1 in the terminal to retrieve the output.  Please post the four lines under Driver Info section of the output.

                            Hello Eugene.Verster,

We can conclude that this is a Dell OEM part from the OUI in the MAC address of the X710 adapter.  While we will continue to investigate this issue; you may be able to get a solution from Dell support.  Please contact Dell, and inform us if they are able to resolve this issue.  We will inform you of any updates.

                              Hello Eugene.Verster,

We can confirm that AFBR-709DMZ-IN3 replaces AFBR-709DMZ-IN2.  We cannot find a reason why this module would not work with the X710-DA4 adapter.  Please contact Dell if you have not already for further support, and let me know if Dell is able to resolve this issue.
