Powering Aero Compute Board using external battery

I would like to use the Aero Compute Board in a drone project that I am currently working on. My goal is to mount the compute board to the drone and have it send commands via MAVLink messages over WiFi. Since I am not using the standard drone included in the Ready to Fly Drone kit, I would like to use a dedicated external battery to power the compute board.

My question is - what type of external battery and power rating would be suitable for powering the compute board? Would the power + UART cable connector (included in the packaging) be a safe connector between an external battery with a 5.5mm male barrel plug? I am also open to alternative ideas, but I would like to avoid the need to disassemble the drone or interface with its hardware directly. Any insight is appreciated.
