Problems on 3D apps with graphics HD620 and Nvidia 930MX

    XavierGLZ

I own an Asus x566 laptop with:

      Intel Core i5 7200U

12 GB of RAM at 2400MHz

      Intel HD 620 integrated graphics

      Nvidia Geforce 930mx dedicated graphics

256 GB SSD for OS and 1TB HDD for files

At the begining i didn't have any problem at running games like grid 2 at medium, or bataman arkam asylum, but after updating windows all the aplications that use 3D graphics doesnt start and stop working, including SolidWorks that I use for school. I have noticed that with the Intel HD620 disabled they works, but isnt the best solution since i can not turnd down or up the brighness of the screen. Also, when I connect another monitor to my laptop, SolidWorks works perfectly, but games doesnt.

My drivers are all up to date, and specificly with the intel's graphics driver i try with the last provided by Asus (2016), and also with the last from Intel (February 2018) resulting the same problem.

I also reinstalled windows from 0, and it works until windows had another update. I cant just reinstall windows with each update. Any ideas for this problem?

I have just manually installed the new driver on the link, but it still doesn't works, and actually i have notice a higher usage on CPU cores when i turn up the computer, much more usage than with the last driver i tried, but just for a few minutes.

Also, i have run the dxdiag tool one more time, here are my resutls.

                  Hello XavierGLZ,

Thank you for trying out the steps provided before.

Please follow the steps below to continue troubleshooting your system:

-Please try setting your graphics card as default and test your system.

                  1. Right-click on the desktop and select NVIDIA Control Panel.
                  2. Click Manage 3D settings in Select a Task.
                  3. Select your desired software from the Select a program to customize drop-down list on the Program settings tab.
                  4. Select the High-performance NVIDIA processor from the Select the preferred graphics processor for this program drop-down list.
                  5. Click Apply.

-Then, try setting your integrated graphics as default.

Please share your results as well.

Besides, the version of Windows 10 you have may be installing incompatible drivers. Follow the guidelines below to know what version of Windows 10 you have installed.

Select the Start button, select Settings > System > About, and then follow these guidelines:

If the About window shows that you have Version 10.0 (Build 10240) or Version 1511 (Build 10565), you're eligible to install Windows 10 Version 1607 (also known as the Anniversary Update).
If the About window shows that you have Version 1607 (Build 14393), you already have the latest Windows 10 update.

What do you mean with setting my graphic card as default? select my 930mx on the nvidia control panel?

I did that before making my post here, but however I have just tried again and make no difference. Specifically with SolidWorks I selected Nvidia high performance as preffered, but when right-click on the shortcut from the desktop, it appears Intel integrated graphics as default for this program. However seleccting or not nvidia high performance and monitoring at the task manager, it runs like for a second with nvida´s gpu (GPU 1) and then turn to intel's (GPU 0) and freeze.

According to my computer, i'm on windows 10 version 1709, it is fall's creator update, isn't it? Should I follow the same steps on the link you provided me?

                    Thank you

                      Hello XavierGLZ,

In the NVIDIA control panel, you can select the preferred graphics processor from a drop down list to open specific applications.

Please do not take actions on the version of Windows 10 installed in your computer. I would like to do some more research about this behavior. Please attach a picture of the Nvidia control panel and the task manager.

Then I did rigth the selection of my gpu as default on last step, and returned to the atomatic selecction of gpu on nvidia control panel.

From the last time i return to the driver provided by Asus because of the matter with the cpu usage at start, and i have noticed another curious thing. I'm used to work with a second monitor when i'm house, and when I turn the driver back to the one by Asus, Solidworks works perfectly when this second monitor is conected (the monitor is VGA 1366x768) but when i disconect it, the program sptop working correctly (as before).

About windows, i havent take any action.

I'm attaching as many screenshots as i can about nvidia control panel, and the task manager specially with the way it acts when runing Solid

                          Hello XavierGLZ,

Thank you for the information provided.

I was looking at the pictures that you sent me and I just wanted to advise you to follow the steps below one more time and apply them. That should force your video card to open the program without adding the integrated graphics to the equation.

Just in case, here are the steps:

Now, please allow me to ask you a few questions to investigate this issue further:

When you connect an external monitor to your laptop, are you using extended or single display?
Do you disconnect the monitor while the program is open?
What version of SolidWorks are you using?

                          Wanner G.

Ok, I tried again following the stepts in the NVIDIA control panel, but it doesn't make any difference, is there anything that I could be making wrong? should I restart or something after the steps? is there a way to run the Nvidia control panel as administrator?

                            Answering your cuestions:

-I use the extended display with my external monitor

-I tried disconnecting, but the program stop working if i try to make any change on the document. Something similar occurs when I disabled the graphics adaptor on the device manager, Solid do works, and if I re-enabled the adaptor it still working until i try opening another document, i mean, it works perfectly with the documents opened before with the adaptor deactivated, but any other document thru the adaptor crash the program.

-Im on Solidworks 2017, but the problem is in general with apps that uses the GPU. With games (from steam library) some of them like DeadSpace drop a notice window saying that can't initialize the hardware, with GRID 2 it just run the logo and keep restarting the game, with Adobe Lightroom Clasic and Adobe Photoshop CC it behaves like Solid. The only program work just perfect is Adobe Illustrator CC, actaully it gives me GPU preview from the NVIDIA.
