External optical drivers wer never validated on the SS4200-E:
so it's hard to tell if they'll work or not. The validated list only includes HDDs and flash drives as you know work.
You could turn on detailed logging. Open the Intel® Entry Storage System manager and log in if necessary. Select the “Settings” tab and replace settings.html?t….. in the browser address bar with support.html. When the support configuration page appears Select “Support Access”. Check "Enable detailed logging. Then cause the issue and get a diagnostic dump file and view messages or soho.log files around the time you installed the optical drives and see what is reported:
Unfortunately there aren't going to be any software changes to the product going forward to enable additional capabilities.
Thank you for your detailed answer. Yes, the log shows me a lot of "unsupported event" messages. Guess it just wont work with ODD.
Today I realized, that printer support does not work either. Yes, it might be well known within these forums that printer support has been removed, but it was new news to me. And this really sucks since it was advertised when I bought the device last year and printer settings are still shown within EMC software.
The printer support indication is a by-proiduct of the EMC software; The Intel® Entry Storage System SS4200-E does not support direct USB printer connection. Never has. See the note at:
