Hi Chris,

Thanks for your reply.

Here are the information as request,

Motherboard Model and manufacturer: Dell Server R730 main board, with Intel c610 series chipset.

Processor Model: Intel Xeon E5-2698 v3 @ 2.3Ghz 16C/32T

Operating System: Windows server 2008 R2 x64

Also we got two Intel P3700 400GB PCIE SSD for our server and we use windows managed software raid 1 for redundancy purpose.

Details as below:

But currently the disk speed is not at the promising level, see a simple copy and paste looks like:

But if we do the disk speed test we can see:

G:\ is the PCIE SSD partition, from the disk speed test, the Read and Write speed is on the normal level.

That's why i would like to try intel RTSe to raid those two PCIE SSD, i would like to see if there is any improvement for our case.

Hopefully the above information will help.

Regards,

Jackie

Hello JackieKey,

Thanks for your reply and all the information you've provided us; in regards to your situation you can find the general iRSTe NVMe Download for your Intel® Xeon® Processor E5 v3 with the Intel® C610 Series Chipset by visiting the following link:

https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000023918/memory-and-storage/ssd-software.html https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000023918/memory-and-storage/ssd-software.html

In that link you'll find both, the Intel® Rapid Storage Technology Enterprise (Intel® RSTe) NVMe User Guide for Windows* with instructions on how to install the driver correctly and the link to Download the RSTe Software; we recommend you to contact your Motherboard/System Manufacturer so they can provide you the latest supported version of RSTe for your equipment to prevent any incompatibilities since the OEM could introduce features that could not be supported with the general RSTe Driver and Software.

You can contact Dell* Support by following this link:

Additionally we strongly recommend you that before doing any changes to your RAIDs or to the Storage Drivers you make a Full backup of your important data to prevent any inconveniences.

Please feel free to ask more questions and to add additional details to your case if you need, we'll be glad to assist you

Hello JackieKey,

Thanks for your reply and in regards to the download of Intel® Rapid Storage Technology enterprise (Intel® RSTe) actually you'll require to contact to your Motherboard Manufacturer (In this case Dell*) so they can provide you the latest supported version of the software according to your Operating System and specific Dell* Motherboard information. The key that you've got from our Registration Center will help you to register your copy of the software once you've downloaded and installed it.

In regards to the performance that you're reported, since you're not using an Intel® tool like Intel® RSTe we'll not be able to validate the results; for that reason we're unable to provide you recommendations in regards to this situation. We strongly recommend you to run the tests once you've downloaded the latest supported version of RSTe from the Motherboard Manufacturer; so we can determine an expected scenario and performance results and help you reach the best results.

Additionally, please remember that if you require more assistance or want to add additional details, we'll be glad to assist you

Best regards,

Hello JackieKey,

Thanks for your reply and in regards to your situation we apologize but we actually don't provide General downloads for RSTe NVMe; the OEM/Manufacturer must support it to ensure compatibility and stability and also we'll be unable to ensure full performance and functions in those unsupported systems.

Additionally, please remember that if you require more assistance or want to add additional details, we'll be glad to assist you

Hi Chris,

Thanks for your update.

We are trying different configuration to test how the performance looks like.

We've removed the mirror and just use one drive stand alone to test the speed.

again the speed test from crystal disk shows the correct speed, but when we do a copy and paste from the drive, the speed shows like 155MB/second which is unbelievable.

Our server has windows 2008 R2, it's a physical server to run database on it, there is no VM configuration.

All the driver and firmware is up-to-date.

We are wondering if Intel has some tool to help us diagnostic what's the issue for such slowness for our P3700 PCIE SSD ?

OR

even better can some techinician gives us a ring ?

Hi JackieKey,

Thank you for contacting the Memory and Storage Support community.

Based on the information provided. It seems that the Intel® SSD DC P3700 Series has the proper performance since CrystalDiskInfo* shows accurate information. We recommend you to check the https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/josebda/2014/08/18/using-file-copy-to-measure-storage-performance-why-its-not-a-good-idea-and-what-you-should-do-instead/ following article in order to check when using file copy to measure storage performance – Why it's not a good idea and what you should do instead.

Hi Junior,

Thanks for your reply, we mainly use the P3700 PCIE SSD for our database, is there a tool that intel can help us to test the performance for the drives ?

Also is there some configuration can be done for the drive to optimize for database purpose ?

Our database is SQL like database but not SQL, it's called Firebird.

Hi JackieKey,

Thanks for the reply.

We would like to inform you that CrystalDiskInfo* works fine so you can trust the tool. If you want something deeper, you can use the following http://manuals.ts.fujitsu.com/file/12176/fujitsu_intel-ssd-dc-pcie-eg-en.pdf evaluation guide from Fujitsu*.

We don't have any such configuration in order for the drive to optimized for database purposes.

Hi Junior,

We understand a simply copy and paste from OS level is not a proper way to test the performance.

Actually we do believe the IO throughput is Ok for our Intel P3700 400GB, we are looking a solution to find out where is the bottle neck that limits our performance.

At the moment, the biggese suspection is the software raid from OS level, according to some articals in your website, we know intel has a tool named Intel RSTe NVMe.

Also our server hardware should support it via Intel C610 chipset, but either Dell or Intel has not able to provide us the installation file for this application.

Our hardware show as below:

Any chance you can help with that regards ?

Also we've tried a solution from you called Intel® Cache Acceleration Software (Intel® CAS), but once i configure the disk to use Intel CAS, the disk refuse for any Raid configuration.

Is that the limitation of Intel CAS ?

Hello JackieKey,

We are sorry for the delay in our response

In regards to your questions

  1. There is a version Of Intel RSTe for NVMe SSDs; however. It is important to remark that Intel® provides the Intel® RSTe technology to OEM manufactures and they will be in charge of providing the appropriate drivers for your system in order to avoid compatibility issues and possible data loss in the future due to drivers not being optimized for your equipment. At this time we can provide you with a generic driver which is intended for VROC compatible systems running Intel® Xeon® Purley base processors, but please do keep in mind that we can not guarantee that the software will work as intended and that you will not find errors, since as we mentioned every OEM is responsable of providing the driver for their equipment.

    https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/27331/VROC-and-RSTe-Driver-for-Windows- https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/27331/VROC-and-RSTe-Driver-for-Windows-
  2. With Intel® Cache Acceleration Software you can create raid volumes to cache data, but the reason why the disk refuses any raid configuration is because Intel® Cache Acceleration will format the SSD or raid volume as raw format in order to protect the cache data.
  3. Another option will be to create the raid before creating the cache,
    1. The Intel® Cache Acceleration Software GUI provides the option of selecting the amount of space you want to use for the cache, assign an specific amount of space for the cache
    2. Then created another volume using the left space for data usage

Please keep in mind that creating multiple volumes on the same raid array that is being used for the cache instance, will reduce the performance of the cache.

Best Regards
