DC P4500 NVMe compatibility with HPE DL380 G9

    Colinb00

Hi, So I have a couple of HPE DL380 G9's in a 2-node ESXi cluster and I would like to install SSD's in them (one in each server). I have 2 x Intel SSD DC P4500's: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/products/memory-storage/solid-state-drives/data-center-ssds/dc-p4500-series/dc-p4500-2tb-2-5inch-3d1.html I have installed in a spare PCIe slot using: https://www.startech.com/uk/HDD/Adapters/u2-pcie-adapter-nvme-ssd~PEX4SFF8639 Unfortunately it does not show up it the Bios.

Is this ssd supported in this server?

Is is possible that the guest OS (ESXI 6.5u1) May still see it although the bios cannot?

          Hello Colinb00,

          Thanks for posting.

According to the server specifications, the system has options to add NVMe drives through Express Bay*. Please bear in mind that we don't support third party adapters, we recommend using the native ports on the server.

To check devices compatibility with the server, please contact the OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer).

NOTE: Links to third party sites are being offered for your convenience and should not be viewed as an endorsement by Intel of the content, products, or services offered there.

It is not common for drives to be detected by the operating system but not from BIOS. However, I remember this happening before, but was limited to a few motherboards and was fixed via BIOS update.

Please let us know if there's anything else we can do for you.

          Best regards,
          Eugenio F.

Just to update and close this thread.

I have diagnosed the problem as a bad HPE pcie riser board.

After much swapping components around (and many v-motions) I now have both nvme's operational.

I installed the latest ESXI drivers from intel, the latest version of Intel SSD tools and setup the two drives in Raid1 via my starwind vsan.

I had to shrink my existing Debian 9 lamp vm's vmdk to fit on the new datastore and BOOM what a flying machine the Mysql database is now!! I'm getting the full nvme datasheet quoted iops and query times have basically gone from minutes to seconds.

Typical queries are date/time period selects on periodic logging data returning upwards of 100million rows to a JS chart in under 10 seconds.

The drive is fully supported for booting and stats are available via the Intel ssd tools.

Objective attained, I am happy.  Thanks for the great advice.  Now on to the next challenge!
