I was checking the setting for scaling_governor on several production servers and noticed a few servers seemed to be missing a core[0]. While troubleshooting I noticed that the "missing" core was not missing or disabled[1], it was missing the directory for cpufreq/scaling_governor[2]. This seems to be the case on 3 of my HP DL380 G9 servers with Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2660 v4 @ 2.00GHz running Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 7.4 (Maipo). Any idea of the cause and what the default behavior would be while missing this directory and config?

cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu*/cpufreq/scaling_governor | wc -l
55 (*should be 56)

cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu38/online

cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu38/cpufreq/scaling_governor
cat: /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu38/cpufreq/scaling_governor: No such file or directory

Hello, paulhal.
Thank you very much for taking the time to reach the Intel® Communities Team.
In this case, I would highly recommend you to ask this question directly to the https://www.redhat.com/en/services/support Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server Support so they can let you know which will be the behavior if missing the directory.
