XTU 6.4.1.15 launch and update issue

After reading about an available 6.5 update on a 3rd party site i checked Intel's download page where was only 6.4.1.19.

Then i remembered XTU has an internal update function and launched it and was confronted with an error message.

I did not overclock my rig (specs in attached SSU report).

A dump via task manager did not expose anything useful.

But i was surprised that XTU loads IgfxDriverWrapper inspite of the fact that Optimus is disabled in my laptop because of G-Sync

After being offered the update XTU loaded it and gave the next error message about verification.

Next i quit XTU and started it again.

First message disappeared.

Then XTU 6.4.1.15 claimed to be up-to-date

EDIT:

Now i downloaded 6.4.1.19 manually from Intel's download page and installed it on top of the old version.

I'll re-check when the next version is available...

ATM 6.4.1.19 works, but the aforementioned launch error appeared only once in four weeks after installation.

I keep an eye on it and let you when it reoccurs.

Today the launch error reoccured with 6.4.1.19

It would be more useful if the program logs stack and program counter somewhere instead of doing a wild guess.

What does "exit unexpectedly" mean anyway?

If it was a real crash, it should have been caught by WINDBG or Visual Studio which are installed on my rig.

EDIT: Did some more tries.

The launch error appears every time after XTU service has been ended in task manager, i.e. XTU starts from scratch.

Launch of XtuUiLauncher.exe in WINDBG gives 2 errors:

Hello Stefan3D

Thank you for the waiting.

Allow me to share with you that we have performed a clean installation of Intel® XTU on a Lenovo ThinkPad X230 Tablet and NUC7I7BNH, we have run the option to check for updates, no errors come up, we killed the task on the device manager, initiate the app check for updates again no errors pop up.

Reviewing the case we have noticed that you have mentioned that you install the version 6.4.1.19 on top of the previous version that was on your system, you can try to uninstall the app and do a clean installation of the Intel® XTU version 6.4.1.19.

Uninstalled, rebooted, installed 6.4.1.19 from scratch, rebooted.

I can reproduce the error every time after killing the service.

I attached a log from the Windows PSR to visualize the issue.

Hello Stefan3D

Thank you for your response.

we have used an ASUS* STRIX H270F GAMING to replicate your scenario install the Intel® XTU 6.4.1.15 and we got a message when we run the tool that there is an update available, when we click on the option we receive the same message that you provide on the OP (the second picture attach) so we went ahead and install the version 6.4.1.19 on top of the other version (following the same steps as you did) complete the system restart, run the tool and no other errors show up.

Whit the results of the lab we can take into consideration that the OS could be causing the error, to rule that out we can use a clean installation of windows if it is a possibility, to save your current configuration and OS you may be able to try this step on a different system.

Don't know if it is relevant, but you tested with a H270 desktop mainboard, while my notebook has a HM175.

Judging from the completely different numbering - 1002 vs 3.05 - Asus does not develop their DT and NB BIOS concurrently.

I'm waiting for the imminent Redstone 4, then i try the app on a fresh installed OS.

I'm still waiting for the official release of Redstone 4, judging from the activities at Microsoft it should be distributed next week.

I got now a copy of XTU 6.5.0.9 from MSI.

For some reason it has a broken installer which fails from scratch.

Therefore i installed it on top of 6.4.1.19

Now i have a working mix of 6.5. and 6.4 runtimes

XtuUiLauncher.exe 6.5.0.9 starts without error message even after quitting XTU service via task manager

I assume you will release a working installer of XTU 6.5.x.x sooner or later...

Just a heads-up: XTU 6.4.1.23 is still not working, both launcher and internal updater...

Hello,

I've been having the same issue as Stefan3D.

I received a notification to install an update in Intel XTU, once I click on it I immediatly get a failed update notification. The same happens in settings clicking 'check for update' and then 'update'.

I've attached a scan obtained from the utility you indicated.

Regards,

Glogia
