Can I put a Celeron 2.8 in a Pent 4 1.7 Socket ?

My son has a Dell 4400 Dimension with a Pent 4 1.7 ghz processor (SL5TK). He wants to upgrade the processor for speed. I was given a Gateway 310b practically stripped, but it does have a Celeron 2.8 ghz processor in it (SL77T). From what I can find on line, they are both 478 pin processors. Can we put the Celeron in the Dell ?? Thanks

Just because the processor fits the socket does not mean that the system's BIOS will support that processor at all. If I remember correctly that Dell Dimension 4400 supported processors only up to 2.0GHz. Thus, the Celeron 2.8GHz processor would not work at all on the 4400 even if that processor physically fits the motherboard's socket.
