    Unable to install Intel RST

    Ryan Clemens

I get fatal error during installation while trying to install 15.5.016 on an H270 on Windows 10 x64.

An earlier version screwed up and I was never able to update, stuck in a new board hoping the fresh drivers would fix things up but looks like this issue from an earlier version is still preventing this install.

      Thanks.

          Hi Ryan Clemens,

I understand you getting some problems when trying to install Intel® Rapid Storage version 15.5. Let me help you on this matter.
Have you tried Intel® Rapid Storage version 15.9?

Please let me know your findings.

          Regards,

I had this "Fatal Error" thing with a couple of releases - but I am using an older mobo with an X58 chipset, ICH10R.  It seems that it chokes trying to install both the drivers and the user interface on my system.  But it isn't really fatal...

            1.  Is your system still running?  (Probably, and that is good good.  If not, check out Re: [BSOD RESOLVED] Newer version of Intel RST drivers for old chipsets.   [I had that crash after the Fall Creators update installed, and fell back to 1703.  I also had it trying to install drivers version 14.8.16.1062]

            2.  Open Device Manager, and expand "Storage Controllers".  If your system is in RAID mode, you should see an entry for the Intel SATA RAID controller (exact wording seems to vary based on release and the specific chipset)  [If it isn't in RAID mode, maybe you don't need RST?]

            3.  Double click on that entry for the Intel SATA RAID controller.  Click on the Driver tab.   Click on the Driver Details button.  Look at the "File Version".  If it is 15.5.0.16, your drivers are installed.

            4.  If the drivers are installed, find the SetupRST.exe file you used for  the install (assuming you don't have Optane), and run that again with the -Nodrv option, and the UI should install:

            SetupRST.exe -Nodrv

Hi Alan, 15.9 fails in the same way as 15.5.

System is running fine with standard SATA AHCI controller, no BSODS.
Not running in RAID mode, previous releases installed fine when not in RAID mode, it updated the SATA controller driver, or config and offered better performance I believe?
I've always installed it regardless of running in RAID.

                Hi Ryan Clemens,

                Thank you for the information.
I was trying to replicate this issue but I did not get same results. The latest Intel® Rapid Storage 15.9 installed correctly. It seems to be a Windows® registry problem on your end.

I would suspect it being the registry, anyone got any ideas on where it goes wrong or keys I can delete to get it working?

I'd like to clean up whatever is left over from previous RST installation if that's what it is preventing this from installing. Does the log provide any info on what's going wrong?

Short summary:  I saw a lot of error 1612 in your logs, indicating that you may have a corrupt installation package.

(Disclaimer: I am not an Intel Denizen.  Just another community member trying to help out a little someone who is having troubles with RST, like I am).

I had a look at your logs, out of curiosity, to compare them with what I am seeing to see if we are experiencing something similar.  Aside from the erorr message itself, it does not look like it.  (I ignored the ME (management engine) logs - I have no familiarity with that at all, and do not appear in my log directories.)

In your IntelRST.log I saw two things of interest:

First (I think NOT fatal, was this sequence.  I wonder what they mean by "banned application").

(My IntelRST log had this same thing, with the very same registry keys).

In the log MSI logs I saw this - but it was tricky to interpret, because some of the log entries seem to relate to a failed cleanup.  So I picked the *first* such transaction.

(So, one thing you might do is rename your logs, and try the install or uninstall again, so that they relate to just one attempt).

Managed to fix this by simply deleting the corresponding registry entry under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Installer\products\
Also managed to resolve an issue with my system experiencing crashes with Heciserver.exe related to the Intel trusted connect service not being up to date? and failing to install with the Management Engine prompting me to look for an inf near the end of the installation process by deleting it's corresponding entry also which was a surprise..

Honestly Intel, how bad are your installers if a invalid registry key screws them up? Shouldn't 'repair' fix this mess? Bad.
