RGB Camera for D435/D415 Depth Modules

Hi everyone,

I am trying to integrate the D435 or D415 depth modules inside a custom enclosure. I have found the depth module, the D4 Processor Card, and the interposer cable that connects the two.

As far as I know, the depth modules do not have an RGB camera on them, but the actual D435/D415 cameras (enclosed devices designed by Intel) have an RGB camera inside them.

I have been trying to find out what RGB camera this is, and where I can source it.

Any help is deeply appreciated.

A company called Framos reckons that the D415 module has an RGB sensor but the D430 module used in the D435 does not have an RGB sensor.

Hello Hardwareisland,

 

 

MartyG is right about the D435 not having an RGB sensor.

 

 

The D415 depth module (the module inside the enclosure of the camera) does have an integrated RGB camera. Go to the bottom of this page and click on "Compare Depth Modules" to see a comparison table of features. It shows that the D415 is the only depth module with an RGB sensor.

Is it possible to connect a custom RGB camera to the bare bones module? I just received 3 boards (mentioned as Video Modules Real Sense Vision Processor D4 card on Mouser). I need some help to find out the right connectors and how to connect to MIPI output cameras to the module so I can make a custome baseline and lens stereo pair.

As the store listing for the cased USB version of the D435 camera specifies that it has an RGB camera even though the D430 module does not, I assume that it is possible to connect an RGB sensor.

Pages 88 to 92 of the 400 Series data sheet contain information on MIPI connections. There is further information about MIPI in the document's appendix on pages 110 to 114.

As a beginner in this, allow me please to ask another question. If I:

I can then connect any pair of MIPI CSI-2 cameras and configure my own stereo pair? Will this work or are there specs that need to hold on the MIPI camera board side???

Apologies if I am missing something super basic...

I'm not an expert on the design of the D4 Processor board, so I can only make educated guesses.

There are two 50-pin receptacles on the D4 processor card, one for connecting the D4 to the Depth Module, and the other for connecting the board to a tracking module and / or RGB sensor. So presumably your RGB camera would be plugged onto the Tracking Module Receptacle.

According to the data sheet, the Camera Receptacle connects the stereo cameras to the D4 Processor. The receptacle's IPEX part number is 20709-050E

The 50 pin Stereo Depth Connector plug part is 20708-050E.

It seems that you also need an Interposer Interconnect to connect a 50 pin connector on the stereo camera to the 50 pin Camera Receptacle on the D4 board.

Ok, I follow, thanks a lot. My understanding however is that I should connect the two MIPI CSI-2 cameras directly to the Camera receptacle by making a custom adapter. Essentially what I am trying to do is make a custom left and right imager for the depth module and not use the IR project and separate RGB sensor.

Ok, I understand. I guess that you want to make something similar to the rigid square Interposer Interconnector board then, so that your custom cameras are fixed close to the D4 board. The pin-out details in the data sheet can probably help you to plan that out.

I'm looking to use the D430 depth module but would like to integrate my own RGB sensor. I've also determined that the best approach will be to make a custom adaptor to connect from the "Tracking Module Receptacle" (50 pin connector) to my own camera module. Has anyone taken apart one of the D435 cameras to see how they did this for the D435 camera? Since the D435 camera also uses the D430 depth module I'm curious to know how they connected the RGB camera to the D4 vision processor board. Has anyone gone through the effort of designing a custom adaptor yet?

Hello, in line with kerfulff 's question, I would also like to know where I can find an FPC interposer cable that connects the 50-pin receptacle on the D4 board (I-PEX P/N 20709-050E) to that on the depth modules (I-PEX P/N 20708-050E).

The data sheet for the 400 Series module kits says "The high speed flex Interposer is custom developed and procured by system integrator"

The system integrator would be the person / company using the module to produce a product. So the more standard option would be to use the Rigid interposer, which is a board that connects the D4 to the depth module. Someone posted an image of the connected boards 2 days ago.
