AC8260 Joule in Access Point mode 5GHz band

I would like to revisit an issue that has been raised a couple of times in the past. The AC8260 wireless adapter used with the Intel Joule does not support "hotspot" or Access Point or even Ad Hoc configurations in the 5GHz band.

The rationale provided for this is generally that there are regulatory issues. Apparently, the new Intel AC8260 did not inherit the Dynamic Frequency Selection (DFS) radar-detection implementations incorporated into its predecessors over the past decade and more.

Nevertheless, DFS restrictions on 802.11 transmitters only apply to the "US" regulatory domain, not Europe or UK or elsewhere. And within the US regulatory domain, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_WLAN_channels DFS restrictions do not apply to 5GHz channels 36, 40, 44, 48, 149, 153, 157, 161, and 165.

How can "Hotspot," Access Point, or Ad Hoc configurations be enabled on 5GHz channels 36, 40, 44, 48, 149, 153, 157, 161, or 165?

Hello ChatwinLansdowne,

We understand you would like to enable 5.2 GHz hotspot functionality on your Intel® Joule compute module using the Intel® Dual Band Wireless-AC 8260 Adapter.

While the steps to enable wireless hotspots or Ad Hoc networks will depend on the operating system being used, 5 GHz hotspots are not supported. We cannot provide information on how to override this limitation.

Best regards,
