HD530 cannot resume from Hibernate 'Page Fault in NonPaged Area'

Hello,

On my Lenovo Thinkpad P50, I'd been using so far without any issues.

After the latest Microsoft updates, system cannot resume from Hibernate. Keep getting BSOD - "Page Fault in Non-Paged Area" and research shows that it is most likely due to INTEL Graphics driver.

From my dump file:

bug check string - PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA

bug check code - 0x00000050

Parameter 1 - ffffdd08`d044fff0

Parameter 2 - 00000000`00000002

Parameter 3 - fffff801`14b8a990

Parameter 4 - 00000000`00000002

Caused by Driver - ntoskrnl.exe

Caused by Address - ntoskrnl.exe+1640e0

Device manager shows:

HD 530 Intel driver version - 23.20.16.4877 dated - 12/1/2017.

Nvidia driver version - 22.21.13.8205 dated - 5/1/2017

Now I have to shut down the machine every time instead of Hibernate/Sleep and is becoming an annoyance. Am frustrated to note that this has been going on for months and all parties concerned - Intel/Microsoft/Lenovo have not come up with a fix that resolves the issue completely.

Where did you research?

In your dump the program counter points to the Windows kernel.

The kernel mode layer handler of Intel graphics would be igdkmd64.sys

One of the sites was lenovo forums:

Re: Thinkpad P50 graphics 22.21.13.8229 (2017/09/05) crash when wake up from sleep

The recent Fall Creator Update from Microsoft has reenforced the OS to install the latest Intel Graphics driver. This results in the sleeping/wakeup issue due to the buggy Intel graphics driver. I cannot even roll back because all previous drivers have been removed from the update.

So, people who want to do the FCU update, please be aware of this issue. Or, Lenovo stuff should let us know how they have tested P50 is compatible with the FCU update. I am waiting for a permanent solution.

Plus a bunch of posts here talk about Hibernate/Sleep issues after latest Windows updates that point to Intel Graphics driver as the culprit.

Do you have a different opinion?

At first check out

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/3073930/how-to-temporarily-prevent-a-driver-update-from-reinstalling-in-window https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/3073930/how-to-temporarily-prevent-a-driver-update-from-reinstalling-in-window

Then try older drivers from this list https://downloadcenter.intel.com/product/88345/Intel-HD-Graphics-530 Downloads for Intel® HD Graphics 530

Select OS from right pulldown menu. Hit show more.

If you encounter an error message about validation, then install driver via "have disk method" as described at:

www.windowscentral.com/how-install-intel-beta-graphics-drivers-surface

(ignore prolog about MS surface)

Perhaps better to uninstall existing driver first and then re-install?

I've also read on the forums that Intel drivers sometimes do not get installed on Lenovo boxes. The error they give is - driver not compatible with machine, need to contact machine manufacturer.

Usually you can install drivers on top of each other. Only if that fails i use uninstall.

Check the tutorial for the "have disk" method to override the error messages.

Have tried all older Intel device drivers but keep getting the same error while resuming from Hibernate.

This is ridiculous.

Have also installed the latest intel driver but no luck.

Now I have the following:

driver version - 23.20.16.4901

Nvidia

Hi nkaufman: Thank you very much for contacting the Intel® Graphics communities and for providing those reports. We will do our best to assist you with this scenario.

In regard to your inquiry, we always recommend to install the drivers provided by the manufacturer of the laptop, in this case Lenovo, since those drivers were customized by them to work with your specific platform. I looked on their web site and for some reason there are no Intel graphics drivers available:

https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/sa/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-p-series-laptops/thinkpad-p50/downloads https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/sa/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-p-series-laptops/thinkpad-p50/downloads

Since you already installed the latest graphics drivers and the problem remains, we will do further research on this matter, as soon as I get any updates I will post all the details on this thread.

Any further questions, please let me know.

Regards,

Alberto R

Thank you for your response.

Am I correct in understanding that you have "not yet" taken a look at the reports that were attached as per your format but will be looking at them and getting back to me once you have an update?

Thanks,

nkaufman: You are very welcome. Yes, I just received an update on this matter, could you please provide the current Power Settings options? This is just to confirm if they are configured properly.

Additionally, this could be an issue caused by the OS update in conflict with an application or service installed by the laptop manufacturer.

Has this issue been reported to Lenovo? Has Lenovo been able to reproduce the issue using the exact same hardware?

Any questions, please let me know.

Regards,

Hello,

Power Settings of laptop - Sleep, Hibernate, Shut down and Restart.

Power Management tab of driver - I have everything unchecked, not allowing device to turn off or wake the machine.

Is that what you're looking for? Please let me know.

Since it took a while for your response and I was getting frustrated with this issue, I went ahead and removed all graphics drivers (Intel and Nvidia) from the laptop, every single one till I was left with Microsoft Graphics Adapter.

Then I installed an older version of Nvidia and Intel graphics driver that used to work (Lenovo supplied drivers)

Nvidia - 22.21.13.8205

Intel HD530 - 21.20.16.4550

The problem still existed. Then while looking at some events in the event log, I thought of Wireless drivers,

Went back to an older Intel wireless drivers for AC-8260 - 19.50.1.6 (again Lenovo supplied package, am so thankful that I have the past several versions of drivers).

For some reason the above driver displays as a Microsoft driver.

But the Hibernate issue is GONE!!!!!!

Have not tried to update graphics drivers to see if the issue was due to network drivers. But Intel seriously needs to look at all its drivers, too many issues are being raised with Windows updates.

Would still like to know what is causing this to enable me to update my machine with latest updates since I have only a work around and NOT A SOLUTION.

Please let me know if you need additional information.

The less said about Lenovo, the better. On their forum, they suggested that people revert to N-1, N-2 or N-3 drivers.

Hello,

Thank you for your reply.

Been there done that, please see my post of Jan 11. As I mentioned, right now I have older versions of Intel Graphics and Network Adapter Drivers.

Was hoping that all the attachments that was included earlier would have pinpointed the cause.

Please let me know.

nkaufman: I just received an update on this matter, we have been unable to successfully replicate this issue while using our latest graphics drivers, chances are that this is coming from some other component, even the operating system itself since the issue started right after updating from RS2 to RS3.

Do you have the option to try a clean Windows® 10 RS3 installation?

Any questions, please let me know.

Hello Alberto,

Thank you for your response. I'm afraid I do not have the option to have a clean Win-10.

From my post of Jan 26:

"....Then I installed an older version of Nvidia and Intel graphics driver that used to work (Lenovo supplied drivers)

Nvidia - 22.21.13.8205

Intel HD530 - 21.20.16.4550

Have not tried to update graphics drivers to see if the issue was due to network drivers. But Intel seriously needs to look at all its drivers, too many issues are being raised with Windows updates."

So if issue is not graphics driver then issue is with network driver or perhaps the drivers working together.
