Why is CORE 2 Solo with 1 core called a CORE 2???????

This is flabbergasting and frustrating - Why can't I sort this all out properly?? I wanna buy a laptop with a GOOD strong processor (WITH 2 physical cores) for under $500 and I am getting all tangled up in the CORE stuff!! thank you!!

core 2 is the family name..

goes by

Core 2 Solo = 1 executing core in one processor

Core 2 Duo = 2 executing core in one processor

Core 2 Quad =4 executing core in one processor

all the above processor are using Intel Core microarchitecture
