Intel Wireless-AC 8265 Desktop Kit for Laptops

Can anyone confirm that the Intel Dual Band AC 8265 M.2 2230 Desktop Kit (Product Brief: Intel® Dual Band Wireless-AC 8265 Desktop Kit) is essentially the same card as the laptop version? I basically want to know if I can purchase the desktop kit and just use the AC 8265 network card for replacing the AC 3165 card in my Dell laptop.

          Hello MikeZ90,

You're correct, the kit uses your standard M.2 Intel® Dual Band Wireless-AC 8265 adapter. Physically, you could purchase this or any other M.2 2230 wireless adapter to replace the factory installed Intel® Dual Band Wireless-AC 3165 in your laptop.

That being said, we only provide support for this adapter if it's being used in a desktop system, which is it's intended use. For a laptop, it's very important to check with your computer manufacturer befoer performing a wireless adapter upgrade. It's a common practice for laptop manufacturers to limit which wireless adapters may be installed in their systems through a hardware white-list. This is generally done to prevent regulatory issues, we have no way to verify nor override this OEM configuration.

When it comes to laptops, we recommend engaging your computer manufacturer to find out which adapters have been pre-approved for your particular model. If possible, it's best to purchase the upgrade part directly from them. This is the best way to avoid unexpected compatibility issues.
