I have seen problems with an external drive when the USB cable is bad. If Windows is having trouble reading the data then it might give you a message that the drive needs to be formatted.
The first thing I would try is a different cable between your computer and the drive.

Sorry to hear a different cable did not help. You might try attaching the drive to a different computer to see if you can get to your files that way. I cannot think of anything else to try, but maybe someone else reading this has an idea.
