Can't enable HDD drive optimization using SSD: unknown error (0xA001004B)

I have 2 drives: a 1TB HDD and a 58GB SSD (OCZ-Agility3). I used to optimize the HDD using the SSD and everything was working fine. Yesterday I disabled the optimization for a moment and I cannot re-enable it, because I get unknown error 0xA001004B. When I googled it, I found a reference to Optane manual, indicating that I should have at least 5MB at the end of the drive unallocated. I don't have an Optane SSD, but I freed 5GB (just in case) at the end of the drive, but this didn't help. Any ideas? HDD without SSD support sucks.

Hi themeo: You are welcome. Thank you very much for providing the file. In this case it looks like the SSD still have the RAID structure on it and what we need to do is to remove it. In order to do that, on the Intel® RST accelerate tab, please choose stop acceleration and then select reset to available. After that you will be able to enable the acceleration feature once again.

Any questions, please let me know.

Hi Alberto,

I tried that previously, and tried it again after your reply, but it leads to exactly the same error. Is there anything else I could do?

best wishes,

Jakub

themeo: I just wanted to let you know that after reviewing the picture of disk management, we can see that the 5GB portion of the SSD you left clear, was not unallocated.

In order to set it as unallocated, please follow the steps below:

1- Take caution before proceeding. We recommend backing up all data.

2- Confirm your SATA disk contains 5MB of continuous unallocated space at the end of the drive.

3- You can view and modify disk setup in Disk Management (Windows Key + x > Disk Management).

3.1 - Shrink the partition at the end of the drive. Right-click the partition of the SATA system OS drive you want to accelerate. Select Shrink Volume.

3.2 - If this option is not available, the partition may not be shrinkable or there may not be space to allocate.

3.3. - (For HDDs) If there is no space, defrag the system volume to create shrinkable space.

3.4- If there is a locked partition at the end of the volume that cannot be shrunk, see How to Resize a Partition for other options.

If there is a recovery partition at the end of your system disk, it may not be movable. You may need to rebuild your OS image, but we recommend working with your OEM or motherboard vendor before proceeding.

Any questions, please let me know.

Hi Alberto,

you wrote that "we can see that the 5GB portion of the SSD you left clear, was not unallocated." - just to make sure, you meant HDD not SSD, right?

And if you meant HDD, there is 5,46GB of _unallocated_ space at the and of the disk - I already followed the procedure that you included before contacting you on the forum.

best regards,

Jakub

Hi themeo: Thank you very much for letting us know those results. Yes, as it was mentioned previously, the requirement of the unallocated space is actually 5MB on the HDD, the fact that you have 5,46GB is actually pretty good for testing purposes. Just to confirm, did you made any recent software/hardware changes on the computer, like a Windows update or upgrade?

Any questions, please let me know.

No significant changes in software/hardware. I just disabled RST acceleration for a moment to defrag the HDD and I cannot re-enable it.

In the meantime, I moved the disk to another computer where it serves as the system disk (so outside of IntelRST). So I cannot confirm if the new version of the software solves the problem.
