    Intel DRS updates

    p.datii

      Hello World,

In July 2017 Russian authorities have expanded the bandwidth for ac frequency allowed for use by public.

      from: •Frequency band: (2400 – 2483,5) or/& (5150 - 5350 & 5650 - 5725) MHz

          To: •Frequency band: (2400 – 2483,5) or/& (5150 - 5350 & 5650 - 5850) MHz

      1) When will this be reflected in existing adapter connections? (Intel® Dual Band Wireless-AC 7265, 8260, 8265)

      2) Is there a special update to be installed or it will happen automatically?

      3) How is this update going to happen? (new driver? new firmware? special update?)

      4) Do I have to change the exising module\s?

For reference: Intel® DRS — No More Wi-Fi Trouble For International Travelers

      Thank you!

      Peter

          Hello p.datii,

Thank you for joining the Intel® community.

In order to assist you with this matter, I will move your thread to the Wireless Networking community.

          Regards,

          Amy C.

            Hello p.datii,

The channels that can be used by the Intel® Wireless Adapters are defined by international standards and country rules. As you know, some of these wireless frequencies are still regulated in most countries around the world. For this reason, the available channels in your PC depend on the regulations of the country it was meant to be used and the configuration from the Computer Manufacturer. Intel does not have a way to override the OEM configuration.

We can advise you to check with your Computer Manufacturer Support, they will let you know which channels can be used by your PC, and if they have a way to change this.

As per Intel® DRS, our generic Intel® PROSet/Wireless Software and Wi-Fi Drivers, which are provided for worldwide use, will not reflect this change.

            Best regards,
            Carlos A.

                   Dear Carlos,

              thank you for the clarifications.

Unfortunately, this does not get me any closer to understanding how the DRS works\should work and how it should be updated with new regulations..

              As an example:

I have a latop with the following card:

              Intel® Dual Band Wireless-AC 8265

The channels advertised by the manufacturer are:

              IEEE802.11a / IEEE802.11n / IEEE802.11ac :

              Channels

              36 / 40 / 44 / 48 /  : W52

              52 / 56 / 60 / 64 /  : W53

              100 / 104 / 108 / 112 / 116 / 120 / 124 / 128 / 132 / 136 / 140 /  :W56

              144/  => for EU

              149 / 153 / 157 / 161 / 165  => for EU

              Frequecies:

              5 GHz Band : 5180MHz-5320MHz, 5500MHz-5825MHz(EU)

To current Russian frequecy is more narrow then the EU one and has less available channels (5650 vs 5500MHz)

Having in mind the old regulation (5150 - 5350 & 5650 - 5725) - how will the expansion work from DRS side?

              Only on newly released modules?

Is DRS dynamic (updated over time) or it will have the same regulation information as it had when it was released?

              Thank you!

              Peter

                Information from Intel® Dual Band Wireless-AC 8265 datasheet (https://www.intel.com/content/dam/www/public/us/en/documents/product-briefs/dual-band-wireless-ac-8265-brief.pdf )

Can anyone please explain this part: "Future regulatory changes are easily managed during the product lifecycle."

                How exactly are they managed?

Is there a change-log or an advertisment on what changes are to be made and when?
