Intel SSD Firmware Update Tool Won't Detect any storage device

Hi,

I am running the SSD Firmware update tool using a bootable USB in order to update Intel SSD DC S3520 240GB.

The server that contains these disks is a Dell R730.

I have removed UEFI and made sure that secure boot is not switched on as suggested by Intel's documentation whilst using the SSD FW tool.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Adrian

Hello ascerri,

We understand that you're trying to update the firmware on your Intel® SSD DC S3520 Series, but the Firmware Update Tool is unable to detect the drive.

In order to better assist you, we would like to have the following information:

1. What is the model number of your SSD? This information is found on the drive's label and should begin with "SSDS..."

2. Did this drive come preinstalled on your Dell* server?

3. How is the drive connected? Directly, or via a RAID adapter?

We look forward to hearing back from you.

Best regards,

Hi,

Thanks for your reply.

1. SSDSC2BB240G7

2. No

3. No Raid, Dell HBA330 Mini. BIOS SATA settings are configured as 'AHCI' mode. I also tried switching this setting to 'ATA' mode to no avail.

Best Regards,

Adrian

Hello ascerri,

Thank you for this information.

In order for the Intel® Firmware Update Tool to detect your SSD, it must be connected directly to a SATA port. Otherwise, the tool will only be able to see your host adapter.

Please try this and let us know if the issue is resolved.

Best regards,

Hello ascerri,

Looking at the specifications for your HBA, we noticed that it uses an LSI SAS controller.

While normally a direct connection is a requirement for firmware updates, your controller type may allow an exception if you use our Intel® SSD Data Center Tool for this procedure.

- https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/26970/Intel-SSD-Data-Center-Tool?v=t Latest Intel® SSD Data Center Tool.- https://www.intel.com/content/dam/support/us/en/documents/solid-state-drives/ssd-software/Intel_SSD_DCT_3_0_x_User_Guide.pdf User Guide.

The Intel Solid-State Drive Data Center Tool works via command line, and must be ran using administrator rights. It is compatible with current Windows*, Linux*, and VMware ESXi* releases.

Firmware update details are found on page 35 and 58 of the User Guide.

You must run the following commands:

1. Identify your SSD, find it's index number: isdct.exe show -intelssd-Note: If this command returns no drives, it means the tool is only able to communicate with your HBA, not the SSD directly.2. Update it's firmware: isdct.exe load -intelssd 1 [replacing "1" with your drive's index number].

Best regards,
