    Slow/Choppy Video Playback - NUC6i5SYH (Temperature Issue?)

      Hello,

       

      I've recently been having performance issues with my NUC, particularly with video playback.

       

      When I try and play a video file of any type and quality using apps such as VLC media player or Media Player Classic (with K-Lite Codec Pack), the video starts to lag and slow down. I've had my NUC for over a year now, and these problems have only begun recently (within the last 2 months or so). I am wondering if it is due to high ambient temperature or if it is more of a software issue.

       

      I recently refreshed windows 10 and have updated to all of the latest drivers. I've ran a diagnostic test, the results of which can be seen below.

      It's been fine up until recently but it just seems generally slow and sluggish now which is disappointing. If it is temperature related - is there anything I can do to help this (e.g. clean fans/ add cooling) or has it gone beyond the point of no return?

          Well, your processor heated up to its Tjmax during the test, so you definitely have an issue. Questions:

           

          1. What was happening with the fan while this was going on? Did it speed up to its maximum speed (~6000 RPMs)? Run an app that will display the blower speed so that you can watch its ramp.
          2. How do you have the blower speed configured in the BIOS? The Cool setting can help a bit, but I find that, overall, the pre-prepared configurations aren't very good. Here is a set of values you can put in manually:
            1. Set the Fan Control Mode to Custom.
            2. Set the Minimum Duty Cycle (%) to 25.
            3. Set the Primary Temperature Sensor to Processor [this is usually the default].
            4. For this sensor, set the Minimum Temperature (°C) to 60 and the Duty Cycle Increment (%/°C) to 3.
            5. Set the Secondary Temperature Sensor to Memory [this is usually the default].
            6. For this sensor, set the Minimum Temperature (°C) to 55 and the Duty Cycle Increment (%/°C) to 3.

           

          I recommend that you get a can of compressed air and clean out the unit. To properly clear the blower, you need to remove the board from the chassis (so that you can access the blower inlet). If this (and BIOS configuration) doesn't alleviate the issue, you next need to look into whether the blower's heatsink has somehow become separated from the processor. In this case - or you can do it regardless - you might want to replace the thermal foam and thermal interface material (TIM, paste, grease, whatever you want to call it) and reattach the heatsink and blower.
