Dual band wireless ac 3165 low speed?

    H_Baeck

      Hello.

I have a HP laptop with whis networkcard and have a connection of 500/100. Through wifi 5ghz I only reach about 150mbit. What can be affecting this? It should reach 400 mbit at least.

Ive tried updating to the latest driver for 3165 but its the same result.

I have a router from my provider  Bredbandsbolaget. Its a Technicolor 799.

      What can I do?

          Hello H_Baeck,

The maximum theoretical data rate of the Intel® Dual Band Wireless-AC 3165 is 433 Mbps, however, this is achieved with 1x1 802.11ac implementations. In this case, you could expect to see transfer speeds close to 400 Mbps.

The fact that you are getting 150 Mbps suggests that your network may be using 802.11n, not ac. For more information about this, please check page 10 of the following document: Next-Gen 802.11ac Wi-Fi For Dummies.
We checked on the Technicolor* 799 access point and it seems some models do not support 802.11ac; also, if it does support ac, you should configure a dedicated SSID for 5 GHz and 802.11ac. We strongly advise you to check with the ISP, or with the access point manufacturer to confirm the capabilities of your router and how to configure it.

          Regards,
          Jonathan B.

thank you. I'll check this when I get home from work. I do know that the router I got from my ISP support AC. It says 11.ac on the box but if its configured to provide this I dont know. I do get very high wifi on my phone though. Through 5ghz.

I'm trying to get in to the router but I can't. It says underneath gateway link 192.168.10.1. But when I connect it to the computer and trying to access it I'm not getting in. Have tried different browsers.

                It's a TG799vac xtream

After I updated the drivers of the 3165 the speed seems to get up to 170-200 mbit. But only 20 mbit upload.

                  Hello H_Baeck,

Make sure that Windows* is up to date with any applicable patches, also, apply the Recommended Settings for 802.11n Connectivity.

If the issue persists, please provide the following information:

                  - Download Intel® System Support Utility, run the tool and use it to create a report with all sections, once the report is created, click on the "Next" button. In the following screen, save the report to a file. Then use the Advanced editor options of the communities to add the resulting file to your post as an attachment.

                  Regards,
                  Jonathan B.

                    Hello H_Baeck,

We checked the log and the connection is OK  but not perfect, the negotiated data rate is 351 Mbps, when the optimal would be 433, however, the signal strength is 99%. We noticed that the driver is not the one recommended, as next step we advise to perform a clean driver installation with the following steps:

                    1. As first option, we advise to use the driver obtained from the Computer Manufacturer Support, in some systems the OEM driver works better. If the issue persists you can try the generic version of Intel® PROSet/Wireless Software and Drivers for Windows® 10 [19.70.0]
                    2. Go to Control Panel, Programs and Features and Uninstall "Intel® PROSet/Wireless Software", if it is installed. When prompted, choose the option to "Discard settings".
                    3. In Control Panel, Device Manager, Network Adapters, right click on the Intel® Dual Band Wireless-AC 3165 and Uninstall it. Make sure you mark the option to "Delete the driver software for this device".
                    4. Reboot the PC or scan for hardware changes, check device manager and if an older wireless driver is detected and installed, repeat the actions to uninstall and delete it as well. Repeat this process until the OS does not allow deleting the driver, or until the controller shows as Unknown Device.
                    5. Remove temporary files: Press the Windows Key + R to open the run box. Type Cleanmgr.exe. Press OK. Select the main drive, usually C:\. Check Temporary Files and uncheck everything else. Press OK.
                    6. Install the Intel Wireless driver. During the first steps of PROSet/Wireless installation, make sure to customize the installation and install all driver components.

Also, we advise you to check the access point configuration, WMM should be enabled, and any feature or listings that may limit the bandwidth should be disabled, or at least giving high priority to this computer.

                    Regards,
                    Jonathan B.

Thank you for such nice support. I did everything you wrote. Tried the driver from the computer manufacturer support. Got a speed of around 150 mbit. Uninstalled that one and is now running driver 19.70.0. Got around 200 mbit down but only 25 mbit up.

I dont know what WMM is..and how to enable it? I now know how to login to my router. I've checked the recommended settings and it's all good.

EDIT: Did a test though in my router settings. When I changed the width setting on 5Ghz from AUTO 20/40/80 to AUTO 20/40 I got slower download but much higher upload (over 100 mbit)

Changed it back and got 212 mbit down and only about 25 mbit up.

                      Added a new report.

                        Hello H_Baeck,

In the new log, the adapter appears to be working correctly, it is worth to mention that you might need to check with the ISP or Computer Manufacturer about this. In our best effort, here are few additional items for your consideration:

                        - In the Advanced Intel® Wireless Adapter Settings, try setting "U-APSD support" to "Enabled" and check if it helps.
                        - Test with the PC close to the access point and check if you get a better connection speed.
                        - Check with access point manufacturer for firmware updates.

About WMM and the other options, this is done in the router configuration so you can get more information from the ISP or the AP manufacturer. Most routers have a section for QOS, here you should make sure WMM is enabled, also, disable bandwidth control features or any other type of white-lists. If they will be enabled, you can set high priority for this PC.

If the issue persists at this point, we would advise to check with the Computer Manufacturer Support.

                        Regards,
                        Jonathan B.

                          Hello H_Baeck,

We hope our recommendations helped, if the issue persists at this point, we advise you to check with the ISP or AP manufacturer about the items we mentioned previously.
