Is there a recommended site that I could go to get an idea about my speed on my NUC?

    AllanA

      Hello all,

My current setup is driving me nuts!  It's a i5 with 16GB of memory and running on a M.2 card.  Writing this I have one browser tab and I guess noting in the background.  It's a new install of UbuntuStudio.  You should see this thing type.  I hit the key and about 2 or 3 seconds the letter pops ups!  Now if I wanted to find out my internet I could easily go and find that out.  I don't have to install anything, make sure my parameters are set correct or learn this program.  I just click, click and click and I have a clue of my internet speed.  Now is there something similar to check my computer speed?  Tell the truth, my Chromebook with 2GB of memory is faster than this thing!

Hi : Thank you very much for joining the Intel® NUC communities.

In order to better assist you, please run the SSU tool for Linux:

          On console mode:
With the user root (sudo) please go to the root directory:
          In there please run:
          dmidecode > nucinfo.txt
Please attach the nucinfo.txt report and any other additional information you considered important to this thread. And also please provide the exact version of Linux you are using. For example: (Ubuntu 16.04 x64, SUSE 4.2,)

Any further questions, please let me know.

          Regards.

            Thanks Alberto for the reply.

The reason I'm looking for something simple is because I'm really a tenderfoot when it comes to anything Linux or Ubuntu.  I can follow directions, but trying to track down directions is rather hit and miss.  Example; I looked up "SSU tool for ubuntu" and the result was "Did you mean: SCP tool for ubuntu".  And that was the first line of your reply!  Any guesses on how the other lines will go?

I'm willing and able to follow directions, but I need a fighting chance here.

            Thanks,

              To rule things out...

Download Ubuntu desktop 17.04 iso and burn it on a DVD and then boot your NUC from this DVD.

              Still same issue?

By the way which NUC do you got?

I'm not the sharpest at doing iso images.  I tried a few times and got nowhere.  I do have some OS installation discs form Linux magazines though.  I can install Mint 18.1.  Tell the truth I wasn't really sold on the Ubuntu.  I couldn't even get my mouse buttons swapped!  It wouldn't switch.  I'm on Solus live DVD right now.  It seems to be working a hell of alot better than the previous OSs.  I could run the live UbuntuStudio too.

The NUC I have is NUC5i5RYH

                Samsung 850 EVO M.2 250GB

                HGST Travelstar 7K1000 2.5-Inch 1TB

                Crucial 16GB Kit (8GBx2) DDR3L 1600 MT/s

I'm hoping I'll be able to to test the M.2 card one of these days as that was bought used.  Everything else was new.  The NUC came from Intel.

You are welcome. Sure, no problem. On the link below you will find the instructions of how to gather the information of your system:
                    https://www.tecmint.com/how-to-get-hardware-information-with-dmidecode-command-on-linux/

Just to make sure, since you are using a different OS now, is the NUC working better or the problem of the NUC running slow persists?

Any questions, please let me know.

Just to confirm, the NUC is working better now, correct?

Any questions, please let me know.

The NUC seems to be working fine.  I have run a few live DVD on OSs and they all seem to operate just fine.  Some are better than others for my liking, of course.  So far I like antiX.  Great little "desklet" on the desktop.  If I had this when I had my issues, it would have been sweet!  There's been a couple of OSs that have this desklet and they are showing what I thought I'd see with my setup and what I am doing, and that's that the resources are hardly taxed.  CPU at 1-10%, RAM at 1GB or less.  I've gotten nothing like the issue originally.

One thing I'm thinking isn't quite up to snuff is my connection from the NUC to the monitor.  Looks like I'm always getting "Cable is disconnected" on the monitor after the NUC powers down after non-use.  I can't wake it back up.  I have to switch off my monitor then back on.  Every live OS I've tried so far does the same thing.

I also still have the original OS installed that cause this post if needed too.

Thank you very much for sharing those results. Perfect, we are glad to hear that the NUC is working fine now.
In regard to the problem with the monitor, do you have the option to use a different monitor? Just to rule out a possible problem with the one you are using currently.

Any questions, please let me know.

                              Hey Alberto,

I don't have another monitor I can use.  I do have the TV and a cable.  I could give that a try.  Thought I could use my Chromebook, but nothing on that.

Actually I got a better idea.  I'm given up with trying to use Linux as my main player.  I ordered a Win 10 Pro to use as my main OS.  Linux is just going to be playing a 2 bit player with me.

The reasons are numerous, but going with my experience with the NUC.  Installing Ubuntu and not being able to swap my mouse buttons was just the tip of the iceberg, but that gives you an idea what is going on.  Really and not getting anywhere on resolving any issues.  I never even got my mail item and that was the printer.  The printer was like starting from the very first steps of printing.  I could not even be able to print  a message of "Hello world" if I wanted to.  Much less anything more elaborate.  Now it's where my resources are getting sucked up somehow and I can't even proceed (using Solus live).  I click on the buttons to restart and nothing!  The computer just sits there and I have to do a manual reset.  Basically one problem on top of another, on top of a another, on top of another.

I'm just going back to Windows and hopefully I can work in that parameter.  At least I'll be able to print a page!

The NUC should work fine with Windows® 10, there should not be any problems, please let us know the results after installing it.
