    USB_VBUS power consumption and temperature

    Kmatsu

      Hi Expert,

Could you support about a power consumption whether 5V voltage apply to USB_VBUS or not
and a temperature of Intel Edison?.

Intel Edison is used on our products ,this mean that our board is custom one.
I have found that the power consumption have increased approx. 0.37W
if 5V voltage have applied to USB_VBUS.

Why this power consumption is cased ?.

I don't use any USB function.
When I use shutdown command(sbin/shutdown -h) to Intel Edison,
this power consumption didn't cause. I guess that this power consumption starts
on Intel Edison kernel or something operation.

If this is cased by internal handling on Intel Edison for USB, is it possible to stop
this consumption by some commands to kernel, driver and so forth ?.

I show pins condition for USB.
          USB_VBUS           : 5V
          USB OTG ID       : OPEN
          USB D+/D-             : OPEN
          USB Power Fault   : OPEN
          USB PWS              : OPEN

I applied the 5V to USB_BUS because of previous thread which is

      Return from Sleep mode

I also want to know a temperature of Edison itself.

How the temperature is supposed on Intel Edison design while it's operating ?

Our Intel Edison have temp. of approx. 45 degC on its surface.
Intel Edison's spec. rage is 0 degC to 40 degC.
This mean that the temp. is over the specification.

      Best regards,

      Kmatsu,

          Hi Kmatsu,

          Thank you for contacting us.

That's weird, I'm not sure, but I think that the power consumption has increased for the applications that are running inside the Edison, maybe it is running an app that you have included that is heavy, and that's why the temperature is high too, are you running any specific application?

We also want to know if you could try to do this on an official Intel board. If the problem persist, we can confirm that the issue is not related with USB_VBUS. You can check the temperature inside the OS using the following commands:

          cat /sys/class/thermal/thermal_zone3/temp
          cat /sys/class/thermal/thermal_zone4/temp

Just consider that the unit is m°C, if the temperature is still high the best recommendation that I can give you is to use a heat sink on your board to keep it cool.

I hope you find this helpful, and will be waiting for your reply.

          Regards,
          Leonardo R.

            Hi Leonard R.,

            You are right,

I also think it is not related to increase the temp. with USB_VBUS.

At first, I want to discuss about the power consumption by USB_VBUS.

When my app did not run, the difference of power consumption clearly caused between the applied USB_VBUS and not applied one. This mean that it does not depend on my app.

Does Edison handle a USB operating to check something in spite of no using USB functin  when the USB_VBUS is supplied 5V ?.

I think that this USB_VBUS is only to detect a connecting device. It is not consumed the power.

I guess that this power consumption cause by internal operation.  I want to stop this consumption by controlling the internal operation.

As for the high temp. , I will check by your mentioned commands.

I hope good solution to discuss with you ! .

            All the best,

            Kmatsu

              Hi Leonardo R.,

I have checked temp. by your mentioned commands.

              The results are as follows:

              $ cat /sys/class/thermal/thermal_zone3/temp

              70000

              $ cat /sys/class/thermal/thermal_zone4/temp

              68000

              All the best,

              Kmatsu

                Hi Kmatsu,

                Thanks for the information.

Just to make sure, did you use these commands on an official Intel board (Arduino expansion board or Mini breakout board)?

If you did it, we can confirm that this issue is not related with the USB_VBUS, and it is an issue with the Edison itself.

I will be waiting for your reply.

                Regards,

                  Hi Leonardo R.,

Can I stop the related to USB activation such as PMIC, USB PHY and something by commands in stpite of detected USB_VBUS ?

I get message of "pmic_ccsm pmic_ccsm: USB VBUS Detected. Notifying OTG driver".

I want to stop USB activation....

                  Best regards,

                    Hi Kmatsu,

I don't know if it is possible to stop the USB activation.

I'm trying my best to help you, so I'm wondering if you could provide me the schematic of your board, I want to take a look at it.

I will be waiting for your response.

                    Regards,

                      Hi Leonardo R.,

Can I get PMIC (SNB9024) control specification ?.

I have accessed TI about PMIC for providing its information. They said that it is not possible to provide me because of custom IC.

                      Regards,

                      Kmatsu

                        Hi Kmatsu,

There is no documentation available for the SNB9024 device, anyways have you checked our last replies? We can try to help you more if it is possible for you to provide the information that we requested.

                          Hi Leonardo R.,

I have no idea for reducing the power consumption so far...

                          Thank you for your help.
