Video Stutter- Choppy Playback Issue HP LAPTOP

There's a serious issue with my laptop which I have been trying to solve from last 6 months! Despite of the decent specs, video playback suffers stuttering in every media player, for ref. I have tried Windows Media Player, VLC, MP4-HC, Films&TV, KMPlayer. The noticeable point is that KMPlayer alone till this time was playing all videos smoothly but its recent update is also witnessing the same problem. I am not sure but maybe KMP was using NVIDIA GPU to decode.I have read hundreds of threads and discussions, I have set Windows power option in PERFORMANCE mode, Intel HD Graphics in PERFORMANCE mode, tried almost 10 different Intel HD Graphics Drivers, have tried every possible way out but it's all in vain. My laptop is facing this right from the day I purchased it, now it's going to be a year trying to resolve this issue. I even installed KLIte Codec Pack but could not help myself. Explaining how the video stutters, it stops momentarily for 0.5-1 sec along with the audio at random places in a normal 720p or 1080p video. This happens for 5-10 times in a normal 5 Min video which believe me, is very annoying. (I normally use .mp4 format vids). Mine research in all these days lead me to terms like 'motion judder' (My display has only 2 freq. settings 40hz/60hz. Another possible reason maybe that my INTEL 5500 graphics card supports only up to DirectX 11.1, but runtime version is 12, coz I have a 5th gen processor. My friends' laptops have a 6th gen processor and so, they don't have this issue. But I can't be too sure as they have 720p display compared to my 1080p display which can be a cause too. I need urgent aid regarding this issue, I don't even know whether I should contact MICROSOFT, or INTEL or HP! I am taking simultaneous helps now though. Laptop Specs- COREi5 5200u , 4GB Ram, NVIDIA 940m 2GB, 1Tb 5400RPM HDD, WIN 10 x64@, 1080p,60hz. Please see to the issue asap and oblige me. And Believe me, simple remedies aren't going to work, I have tried each one of them.

I have previously used Intel Corei3 and Pentium Duo systems with 2GB rams and no dedicated GPUs, still they played FHD vids flawlessly. This issue is surely not due to incapable hardware.

I tried SiSandra Software Lite Benchmarking tool which clearly stated that INTEL 5500 Graphics Driver was performing poorly in VIDEO TRANSCODING tests in my laptop as compared to its ratings.

Awaiting some effective answers and suggestions.

I have attached a pic featuring low performance of INTEL HD Graphics Adapter in Video Transcoding for 720p HD videos. Even my phone has a INTEL ATOM Z3580 processor mated to a 4GB Ram, but there are no video stutters happening like this! I doubt if its a hardware problem in integrated INTEL GPU, however my CPU works great.

Hello ShivanshMTD,

Thanks for the information you sent to me.

I would like you to try updating some of the computer drivers in a specific order.

Please install this driver first, and then restart the computer https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/swdetails/hp-pavilion-15-ab200-notebook-pc-series/8499306/model/8818855/swItemId/ob-160418-1?sku=N8L46PA https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/swdetails/hp-pavilion-15-ab200-notebook-pc-series/8499306/model/8818855/swItemId/ob-160418-1?sku=N8L46PA

Install this other driver, and then restart the computer one more time https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/swdetails/hp-pavilion-15-ab200-notebook-pc-series/8499306/model/8818855/swItemId/ob-172872-1?sku=N8L46PA https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/swdetails/hp-pavilion-15-ab200-notebook-pc-series/8499306/model/8818855/swItemId/ob-172872-1?sku=N8L46PA

Since your computer comes with two video cards the graphics drivers need to be installed in a specific order.

On the keyboard press WinLogo key + r, then type in devmgmt.msc, double click on Display Adapters -> Intel HD Graphics -> Driver tab -> Uninstall -> Select the check box Delete the driver software for this device -> OK, but do not restart the computer yet.

Please also uninstall NVIDIA* driver. In Device Manager, double click on Display Adapters -> NVIDIA GeForce 940M -> Driver tab -> Uninstall -> Select the check box Delete the driver software for this device -> OK, and then restart the computer.

Please download our graphics driver from this link https://downloadmirror.intel.com/26682/eng/win64_154034.4624.zip https://downloadmirror.intel.com/26682/eng/win64_154034.4624.zip

Install our graphics driver with the steps that are on this YouTube video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S1KzoQDjMMY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S1KzoQDjMMY

Resart the computer, and then reinstall the NVIDIA* driver from this link https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/swdetails/hp-pavilion-15-ab200-notebook-pc-series/8499306/model/8818855/swItemId/ob-175135-1?sku=N8L46PA https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/swdetails/hp-pavilion-15-ab200-notebook-pc-series/8499306/model/8818855/swItemId/ob-175135-1?sku=N8L46PA

Let me know if issue persists or not.

Dear Fred, I am extremely sorry to tell you that this solution didn't worked for me. Still, the videos are stuttering, especially 720p in WMP/VLC/Films& TV , now even along-with the stutter white boxes gets formed on the video for around a second, and along with the audio breaking for around 0.5 seconds. And worth mentioning, the previous version KM Player is still playing all the videos flawlessly!

When i uninstalled both the drivers from device manager, the DISPLAY ADAPTERS section vanished away! So, i tried running the setup directly, but it said the system doesn't meets requirements. Then i noticed 2 unknown devices showing down on that list, I updated the driver for the first unknown device by selecting the downloaded Intel driver and restarted. I performed all steps as told, I am beginning to think this as a hardware fault but how come KM Player plays it all still remains a question (Does it uses NVIDIA?) !

I have attached the screenshots of the details of updated drivers.

Anyways hearty thanks for helping me, I hope you will further communicate and try to solve this issue. I undoubtedly appreciate your co-operation.

SHIVANSH

The screenshots attached can help a bit Fred, suggestions given by the bench marking software is to increased 'SHARED MEMORY' which is currently 128 MB. It also says that the GPU speed is lower than rated, however i have set it to maximum performance mode!

Hello ShivanshMTD,

Thanks for the additional details you are providing to us.

Does the issue happen while playing a FullHD or 720p YouTube video?

Have you tried any other file format that is not .mp4?

Please also run the following utility and let me know if the test passes or not https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/19792/Intel-Processor-Diagnostic-Tool https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/19792/Intel-Processor-Diagnostic-Tool

Dear Fred,

I tested my processor using the diagnostic tool you provided and it passed all tests successfully. Moreover, I tried playing different formats like .mkv and .avi (local videos) and all stuttered the same way.

However, the very surprising fact is that the same videos on you tube in google chrome are running flawlessly at 720p ! this might be the rope to the solution.

Thanks a lot for your help.Hoping response soon.

I am hereby attaching the screenshot of the result of Intel diagnostic tool.

Hello ShivanshMTD,

There is a chance the issue might be related to the way videos were encoded.

Did you record the videos? What type of videos are you trying to play?

The videos are general music videos downloaded from different websites as well as some are downloaded from you tube. They all are playing flawlessly in my phone(intel z3580) and other laptops.

These videos are the same which i played on you tube!

So, the videos are normal 720p. Hope this helps.

Or in other words, all 720p HD videos that are locally saved are stuttering.

Hello ShivanshMTD,

I would like you to try making the computer open the video player with the NVIDIA* video card. Please try the following steps:

  1. Right-click on the desktop and select NVIDIA Control Panel.
  2. Click Manage 3D settings in Select a Task.
  3. Select your desired software from the Select a program to customize drop-down list on the Program settings tab.
  4. Select the High-performance NVIDIA processor from the Select the preferred graphics processor for this program drop-down list.
  5. Click Apply.

Let me know if issue persists or not.

Dear Fred,

I have tried this setting previously, but it doesn't allows you to change the graphics card preference for any media players. It can be used only for certain Games.

I have also found another connection to this problem. Yesterday, when i played a video in VLC , it ran smoothly throughout and i checked the Task Manager after that , where the Disk Usage was less than 5-10%. Normally, my disk usage continuously ranges between 40-80% and sometimes even cracks up to 100% !

I have the same disk as that of my friends (TOSHIBA MQ01ABD100), but unlike them, i have a software INTEL RAPID STORAGE TECHNOLOGY installed, which has certain options like LINK POWER MANAGEMENT: Enabled . Should i uninstall this software, why is it present only in my laptop? The apps that mostly eat up my disk usage are SYSTEM , SUPERFETCH,ANTIMALWARE SERVICE EXECUTABLE all running at around 8 MBPS with sudden variations that reach upto 30MBPS sometimes, maybe causing video to stutter, since stuttering happens randomly, and sometimes doesn't happens at all!

Another discussion with an HP Expert resulted with him saying that this is a NO-WIN problem , it can't be solved without fresh Windows Install.

Please guide me further.

THANKS A LOT for staying with me for so long and helping me dedicatedly.

Regards,

SHIVANSH

Hello ShivanshMTD,

We have covered pretty much everything. At this point in order to discard software issues the best option would be reinstalling the operating system. You can reinstall the operating system using the HP* recovery discs. This link will show you how to get them in case you do not have them https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c00707939 https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c00707939

If issue persists after you reinstall the operating system then the issue might be hardware related.
