    (solved) Intel NUC7i3BNH crashes

    Landorin

      Hello,

first of all, I'd like to express my admiration for the NUCs, they're excellent for so many things. In my case I use it as a Windows 10 "server" for Plex and some surfing so there isn't really a lot installed and running. I use a Crucial SSD (MX300) and two Crucial 16GB Single DDR4 2133 MT/s (PC4-17000) SODIMM 260-Pin Memory - CT16G4SFD8213, all certified to work with the NUC.

I installed the latest BIOS (0042) and the available drivers (except for the sound card, that one didn't work so I used the one from realtek).

However, my new NUC crashes occasionally with 0x000000ef ntoskrnl.exe bluescreens and I'd like to ask for your support. I already ran the windows 10 memory test but that did not result in any errors.

Is there any program that allows me to collect the necessary diagnostic information for you?

      Best regards,

Try updating the firmware on your SSD.

Hi: , Thank you very much for joining the Intel® NUC communities.

When the NUC crashes or it shows blue screens normally that problem is related to either memory RAM or SSD, in this case the memory seems to be fully compatible and so is the SSD.
Even though you ran the memory test and it shows no errors, as a troubleshoot step, what we can try is to test the NUC just with one memory stick at the time on both memory slots, this is just to rule out a possible problem with any of the memory sticks or any of the DIMMs in the NUC.

Do you have the option to test the NUC with a different SSD? This is just to confirm if there might be a compatibility problem between the NUC and that specific SSD.

As an option we can try a clear CMOS on the NUC as well:
            http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/boards-and-kits/000005805.html

In regard to your question, we have a tool that does an overall test on the processor and all the NUC components, if it passed the test the NUC should be working fine:
            https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/19792/Intel-Processor-Diagnostic-Tool

Just in case here is the list of tested peripheral for the NUC, there are a lot of different devices that are not listed there and that are fully compatible with it, is just that Intel did not test them:
            http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/boards-and-kits/intel-nuc-kits/000023164.html

Also sometimes the SSD has the option to do a firmware update, please get in contact with the manufacturer of it to verify that information:
            http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/support-contact?cm_re=us-support-ssd-_-left-nav-_-contact-us

Please let me know the results of trying the steps above.

Any further questions, please let me know.

            Regards,
            Alberto

                Hi Alberto,

thanks a lot for all the information. The SSD firmware is up to date according to the official crucial ssd tool.

What a nice diag tool! I ran the test and it failed on PCH. Not really sure what that means, can you make something out of that?

Oh, also, I reset the CMOS already to factory defaults after I updated to 0042. I did change a few options after such (such as activating Wake on Lan but no overclocking or so).

Hi, Thank you very much for sharing that report and those results. In regard to your inquiry the PCH is the Platform Controller Hub and basically what is does is work as a BUS to allow the communication between the the processor and the motherboard. What we can try in order to fix that problem will be to re-install the chipset and management engine drivers on the NUC and ran the tool again, when you install Windows those are the first 2 drivers that need to be installed:

Please let me know the results of trying those drivers.

Another diagnostic tool that you can run is NirSoft's BlueScreenView (start at http://www.nirsoft.net/utils), which displays information about the BSOD dump files that are on your system.

Thanks again! Apparently the management software was already installed as it only offered a repair option.

The chipset driver installs successfully. After a reboot the test still fails on PCH however.

I noticed the Intel(R) Driver Update Utility 2.7.2 reports the chipset version 10.1.1.38 as installed and offers 10.1.1.42 as latest. Yet no matter how I install (via the utility or with your download link) the utility keeps saying I am on 10.1.38 as if the driver was never updated. According to google there is no way to uninstall the old chipset drivers. Is there any way to enforce the update or hack it somehow? I'd really prefer to not return this nice piece of hardware unless it turns out it's really hardware related.

I'll also give that bluescreenview a go.

, You are welcome. Thank you very much for providing that information. In order to try to install the chipset driver manually, we can try the following steps:
                            Open Cortana
Enter "cmd" in there to open up the command prompt.
Enter "cd desktop" (For this step the work, after you unzip the files, please save the chipset.exe on the desktop)
                            After that enter: "setupchipset.exe –overall"

Please let me know the results of trying those steps.

                              Hey all,

the chipset drivers refused to overwrite. I reinstalled Windows several times yesterday (stumbled across various driver issues). Eventually I ended up installing Windows 10 anniversary update version and the chipset driver I installed manually is now the latest and the audio drivers worked straight away. However, the intel management drivers got the same issue now. The current version cannot be overwritten by the latest version. I uninstalled and reinstalled Intel ME drivers but same result: installed: 11.6.0.1032, latest: 11.6.0.1136. Also, I reset the CMOS.

The PCH test still fails and the NUC still crashed twice so far with bluescreens. The first one again relates to ntoskrnl.exe (but the bluescreen viewer does not show any more useful hints to me) and the 2nd one is not even listed (the bluescreen itself did not even render the full text when it crashed).

What else can I do/test? Does that mean something on the mainboard might be borked? :/

Hi, Thank you very much for providing those results, we really appreciate that. It is great to hear you were able to finally install the chipset driver and we are sorry to hear that the management engine driver cannot be updated.

To answer your question, at this point the next thing to do will be to test it with a different hard drive/SSD, if you do not have that option maybe there is a PC repair store close you that will be able to do that, in order to confirm if the SSD is working fine. The other option in this case will be to replace the NUC.

                                  Hi Alberto,

thanks for your continous great support!

                                  I'll check that out tomorrow.

Today, I looked at the PCH test result again and noticed these lines:

---  Error while retrieving SATA Device Information from OS  ---

                                  ..Platform Controller Hub Test Failed..

                                  PCH Fail

                                  Return Status  1

I wonder whether the result differs depending on what kind of hardisk is used? The additional SATA slot is unused since I use the MX300 SSD on the M2 slot instead. Or should the test pass regardless of which HDD slot is used?

Check regedit what driver version is installed. On mine nuc regedit shows -> 10.1.1.42   intel driver utilty says 10.1.1.38

intel management engine  driver sys files  are old or wrong   file version 11.6.0.1032   (teedriver.sys, teedriverX.sys)   that's included in 11.6.0.1036 driver package
