In regard to your inquiry, if the OS was installed with the SATA mode on ATA or AHCI, then in order to enable RAID a re-installation of Windows is needed. Normally if you get in the BIOS you should be able to see the RAID option under SATA mode for you to choose it, but if you do that the laptop will not boot into Windows, that is why a re-installation of the OS is needed once you select that option, and yes, for the IRST to work properly the RAID mode needs to be enable.
The chipset on your laptop, Intel® HM170 supports RAID, please look under “I/O Specifications”:
But remember that Dell has the capability to customize the options in the BIOS, so, if they decide to disable the option for RAID, that is probably the reason why you do not see it under SATA devices.
