    Bluescreen continuously on NUC6i5SYH

      Hi. I have a NUC with an M2 ssd, 16GB of RAM. I installed Windows 10 64bit, as well as several programs.

       

      I downloaded the link to all the components for the kit and installed as many as I can. No items in Device Manager are showing missing drivers. All updates have been installed.

       

      I ran sfc /scannow and all hardware came back as correct.

       

      I installed the very latest bios, but it still happens. I have not altered any bios settings other than to allow boot from USB, which is how I installed Windows.

          1. Try using just one memory module at a time, swapping it between the upper and lower memory slots.

          2. Run the MemTest86. You can download the application here: MemTest86 - Download now!  You shall download the Windows version for creating bootable USB drive. Prepare the USB and run this test.

            Does this happen too often or it is random?
             
            What is the ram part number that you have installed? Would you mind posting a picture of it?
             
            Make sure Windows® is to up to date.
             
            If this happens too often, the best way to determine if this is hardware of software issue is to access your system in safe mode, if you get BSOD when in safe mode most likely this is a hardware issue, at this point I would suggest testing with different ram, you can check the System Memory for Intel® NUC Kits NUC6i3SY and NUC6i5SY
             
            Do you remember what program you were running when you experienced the blue screen or you were not working with any applications? If you’re able to recreate the process and end up with the crash, then there’s a good chance that one of the pieces of software you are using could be causing the problem. If the BSOD happens while you’re using a program, or loading one up, then it might be worth uninstalling the software and then reinstalling it again.

              I will check the memory and post my results here.

               

              Meanwhile, this has mostly happened while I've been running Chrome. But I have not been regularly running much else, because I have been primarily setting this machine up by installing applications and other updates. I have continued to install update, include updates for Windows 10.

               

              I have attached a filtered  dump from the Event Viewer to this message. I will post the first 50 lines. I can post more if someone requests it.

                Reset all hidden Chrome flags to default: enter address   chrome://flags/   in the Chrome address bar. Press "Reset all to default" in right upper corner.

                  To answer the Memory Questions,

                   

                  The memory modules are Kingston DDR4 1.2vault SODIMMS. I purchased the memory, M2, and unit together from NewEgg, verifying that they were compatible with one another.

                   

                  To troubleshoot any issues with memory seating, I removed the SODIMMs. I changed their order and switched the top and bottom SODIMM. I very carefully made sure they were very firmly seated in their new slots.

                   

                  For the memory test, I used Ultimate Boot CD - Overview  on my utility USB drive, (Created with YUMI from https://www.pendrivelinux.com/ )

                   

                  I booted and ran  Memtest-x86 ver 5.01. I ran the memory test overnight, and let it run 10 hours, taking three passes. No errors were found.

                   

                  I will have to do more testing on the machine to verify if the Bluecreen repeats. I also downloaded and applied the latest Windows 10 updates before shutting down and testing the memory.

                    Regarding the flash here, I am seeing these side-by-side errors. I'm not familiar with what this is.

                     

                    I am intending this machine to be primarily a workstation my wife will be using doing graphics and editing videos. So I have some applications on there including Adobe Premiere Elements and Audacity. I can see that there have been some errors relating to Audacity.

                     

                    It's not clear to me from this if the errors with Adobe Premiere and Audacity are resulting in the BlueScreens.

                      After updates, I prompted a bluescreen again. Once again, I had Chrome open. I had six or seven tabs open on one window, and one other window just playing a YouTube video. The BSOD occurred after a few minutes.

                       

                      Very often before the BSOD happens, I see artifacting in the screen. That has happened almost every single time.

                       

                      I hesitate to disable all the Chrome flags for this reason: I use Chrome on five other devices regularly, hence I also sync my settings and extensions. So I would not want to lost any of that, if it is done.

                       

                      The NUC itself doesn't particularly make loud fan noise like it's having trouble. But YouTube does seem to prompt it.

                        1. I was not talking about resetting all settings in Chrome, rather resetting to default all hidden experimental flags. You will see those flags under url: chrome://flags/

                            Those flags are experimental and can disturb normal operation. One of such flags for example is Hardware-accelerated video decode , if set to enabled can cause windows crash. So try to reset those flags to default and see what's happened.

                         

                        2. An other thing you can test is not to use Chrome for internet browsing/watching video. Instead use Microsoft Edge and see if Windows crashes.

                          Here's where I am. I did start up Chrome. I started YouTube and let it play. I saw it do more artifacting.

                           

                          I started Firefox and also started YouTube. 30 seconds into YouTube I got artifacting and then a blue screen.

                           

                          From there, I removed both RAM modules (2 @ 8GB sticks). I replaced one of them in the lower slot, and started up the machine. I ran YouTube videos in windows in both Chrome and Firefox. While I did see artifacting at first, after 30 minutes, both were still playing and there was no blue screen.

                           

                          I then turned the machine off and swapped in the other 8GB stick in the lower slot and put aside the one I had been testing. I booted into Windows and had a window in Chrome and a window in Firefox playing YouTube continuously.  After 30 minutes, I still did not have a bluescreen.

                           

                          I will do more testing.

                              I have installed the graphics driver from compmgmt.msc and right-clicking on the display driver and choosing "update." I've done that, updated the driver, and I've checked it a few times since. So far, it says that "the best driver is already installed for your system."

                                I had Firefox continue to play YouTube videos. Had two more BSODs. I have been pushing it in browsers other than Chrome, to eliminate a Chrome problem.

                                 

                                I uninstalled the graphics driver and restarted. On restart, the driver automatically reinstalled and I received a BSOD again. This time I manually chose the display driver to be the one you linked to, win64_154516.4627. This time it installed.                                   In addition to the troubleshooting that I did above, still resulting in Bluescreens, I'll give some history on this system.

                                   

                                  This is a refurbished system. My original was bricked because I had it set to fast-boot with a Linux OS. I sent it back, and Intel sent me this system as a warranty replacement. It was an unboxed system, presumably refurbished.

                                   

                                  I was installing Linux desktops on this system as well. I found that Ubuntu and Fedora and Mint all had tendencies to freeze, especially with video. I was not trusting the stability of Linux, particularly Gnome. So I went ahead and purchased Windows 10 and installed it. That is how I got to where I am so far.

                                   

                                  As it is, the only consistency here is that four subsequent OS installations have experienced crashing on this system. Memory checks have returned without errors.

                                   

                                  I'm starting to feel that it's not worth the time I am putting into this project. I getting ready to RMA this system at this point, if possible.

                                    Hello, Ivan. I am requesting further instructions. Should I open up a help ticket directly with Intel for this system? I have installed the latest drivers per your suggestion. I have experienced blue screens with browsers other than Chrome running. I have run memtest-86 and found no errors on three passes.
